Spring Break ‘09 Pt. 2: Rocktown Pt. 2

Spring Break ‘09 Pt. 2: Rocktown Pt. 2

While Rocktown is well known for The Orb, there are many other quality boulders to be climbed there.  Unlike nearby HP40 which doesn’t have that many steep lines, Rocktown has plenty to choose from which is one of the main reasons I was excited to go there.

Unfortunately, tearing my LCL within the first 5 problems of the trip didn’t help much in allowing me to take advantage of all the steep lines, but you would be surprised how one can adapt when there is no other alternative (besides stopping climbing…which is dumb…always).

Here are a few pictures of some of the fun problems we climbed on:

What guide did you use while you were there? When I went to Rocktown a few years ago we only had the Dr. Topo guide.

That was all we had too although one member of our group had been to rocktown previously. The guide is not great but I’ve used much worse. There is also some info on RC.com about areas like the Golden Harvest boulder as well that we used to find Golden Child, a cool V5.

Yep, definitely torn on the MRI. I’m trying the brace route in the hopes that I can avoid surgical repairs.

Best case is another few weeks. If I need surgery that will obviously complicate matters/ruin my entire spring and half of summer.

if it’s a clean tear, you can probably avoid the surgery for a while. as i’ve explained, i blew my acl and rather than reconstructing it, they simply cut out the frayed ends so i have just two clean nubs that do not interfere with the articulation of the joint any more. this leaves my knee very unstable, especially on those lovely upper chaos talus scrambles, but all the climbing i have ever done has been entirely without a right knee acl. that said, i do need it to be reconstructed in the next decade, but it’s been ten years of heel hooking.

before the scope surgery, however, the frayed bits of meniscus and acl were catching and sticking, which messed up my walking and being rad until after the surgery… so, if you’re having those issues, then knife that shiz and get it over with.

Fortunately I don’t have the catching or sticking which they said would have required immediate cutting.

The Dr.(s) did say that in general it is better to fix ligament injuries at the time they happen as the surgery is less effective if you have it done later. Something for me to ponder as I look forward to being rad again…

        It’s all about the radness….ALL!

        go rad or go home.

I really hope you can climb soon brian. No more injuries allowed.

interesting. my doctor said i was too midget-a-fied and young, so he didn’t recommend reconstruction till i turned 35. sounds like there was a conspiracy against me and i would certainly be climbing v12s onsight now if i had seen through that treacherous veil at the time! rage! onsightig v12s! for reparations, i will just start crediting myself all the v12s i know i would have been complelled to onsight.
