Sean McColl, Paul Robinson and Daniel woods have posted up in Ticino, Switzerland and as one might expect they’ve managed to climb their fair share of hard boulders.

However, in a sign of the times we don’t go to their 8a.nu scorecards for updates but rather to other upstart sites where they’ve begun to log their ascents.
27crags.com is the new home for both Woods and Robinson1 where we can see that they both repeated Franz Widmer’s Somewhere In Between with both suggesting an upgrade to V14.
Over on Sendage.com we can learn that McColl has been having a great trip making fast work of New Base Line (V14) and Boogalagga (V13) among others. He then added the latter problem’s sit start to complete Big Paw for his first V15. Not bad for someone training for sport climbing World Cups!

Update: On the last day of his trip McColl added a repeat of Toni Lamprecht’s The Dagger (V14) and a flash of Extreme Ironing (V12). What a trip!
- And Nalle Hukkataival as well ↩
Jens is comical at his best and annoying at his worst, 8a.nu’s site design is ugly, outdated and potentially insecure (passwords are communicated in cleartext, users can inject arbitrary html code in their posts etc.). But it’s true advantage lies in its huge database, and other competitors will be chanceless unless they can match 8a.nu’s database, but how to establish a huge database without users who don’t want to use their service?
Will the majority of 8a.nu users follow a couple of climbing celebrities to 27crags or sendage? Maybe, but I remain unconvinced for the moment.
Does anyone know why they are abandoning ship?

Sendage looks way better than 27crags

i like sendage, however i rarely use FB… it would be nice if it stood alone and had the social media aspect as an add on.

27crags looks way better than sendage

i know you can import 8a.nu sends into sendage’s database. can you do the same on 27 crags?

27crags has a more classic, cleaner look. Sendage has a more cutsie look with the trophies next to sends and big, bubbly stars. I also think it is silly to have such a narrow default pixel width for a database website, as it makes everything seem so crammed left to right (it works for blog-exclusive sites because it prevents an overwhelming feeling from text). I wasn’t even aware of sendage until today.
Wouldn’t surprise me if 27crags slowly takes over from 8a.nu simply because Woods, Robinson and Hukkataival all use it. It needs a little work on cleaning up the information for different climbing areas (especially in the US, and something that will happen over time) and perhaps lacks a few nifty features, but nothing that can’t be added later.

Oh, but I DO like the 5 stars that Sendage has, seems to make a lot more sense (and can go along with Emerson’s rating system) then 3 stars.

Agree with your assessment on the sites look. But there is a lot more to climbing than just bouldering, and there is a lot more to bouldering than Woods, Robinson and Hukkataival. I don’t think 8a is going to see any sort of mass exodus just because they are there. The funny thing is for all the press coverage on those three, Ondra was number one on 8a.nu anyway (oh and yeah he’s pretty handy on a rope as well). Perhaps that’s a possible reason for moving elsewhere…
loading...
Yeah, because Ondra hardly ever gets press coverage . . .
I seriously doubt that they chose to use a different means of logging their climbs just because Ondra was ranked ahead of them on 8a.
loading...
Agreed, also, wasn’t Paul a logbook user anyway?
loading...
Oh I agree with you, just a good stir of the pot 😉 It seems a little strange anyway.
loading...
Definitely not letting Sendage “post to facebook as me”. Facebook connection is idiotic. Would love to hear about importing 8a.nu info to 27 crags if it is possible

Sean is on a roll. 2nd in a lead WC last month and now his first V15! If you haven’t checked out his blog, I highly recommend it. He gives in depth comp recaps and detailed (sometimes even move by move) break downs of his hard sends.

Tru’ dat. If you’ve seen the footage of him putting down Dreamcatcher (spliced together for video-polish or no) it seemed like it was just a matter of time before he went over 9000. He looks so in control in other vids too. Definitely climbs with impressive poise from what I can tell. Definitely looking forward to more form him and all the other animals out there.
loading...
True! It’s nice to see McColl’s name in the titles. I’d much like to see some other footage of his, especially if it’s of the same quality as his Dreamcatcher ascent.

McColl is friends with the creator of Sendage and the reason the other 3 are using 27crags exclusively should be pretty obvious if you think about it for a bit.

$$$?

I can assure you they are not getting paid for it 🙂

I guess I’ve been misinformed then??

in totally unrelated news, anonymous sources have confirmed that crimpin’ ain’t easy has recently inundated 27crags’ inbox with emails containing his résumé, tick list, ape index, a photoshopped version of this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ctreadway/3590634953/ with DG’s face replaced with his own, and a short ode to little bears in broken finnish

Uhhh, cuz of the color scheme of 27crags, obviously. Blows all the other websites out of the water. And we all know pro-climbers are obsessed with their color combos, especially Robinson as an artist. I mean, just look at Wood’sspiffy organic pads. 😉

Aaron we are always open up for some nifty updates on our system, there is a big workload right now on improvements but we will try to push our limit and get them out as soon as possible.
One can send feedback on what you would like to see on the site on either by email my first name (at)27crags.com or use the feedback feature that is located on the left side on the webpage.
Best regards,
Sakari McGregor

Yes! I did see the feedback feature and browsed through it quickly. I saw that there is a lot on your plate already in terms of improvements. I know how much work all that can be! Once I get more familiar with the site I’ll def chime in if I happen see anything that hasn’t already been covered in the thorough feedback from everyone else.
loading...
Well I don’t see a top 100 list or other ranking for the new sites. I’ll give those sites a free hint. People love that shit, no matter how many people deny it.

the 2 big faults of 8a.nu is the old design and jens…
one can be fixed but the other one will stick forever
i definitely recommend 27crags
