Video Friday – 9/30/2011

I’ve covered the climbing competition aspect of last weekend’s Nor’easter pretty extensively at this point, but there’s another aspect of the weekend that requires some further examination.  For much of the time I’ve done this website I’ve been a complete outsider when it comes to the climbing industry and the scene that goes along with it.  Living in Wisconsin this isn’t too hard to do.

That all started to change last year when I went to Yosemite to meet with the folks behind PCI and continued this year as I started to make more connections after attending my first trade show.

It’s always a little strange to actually meet people who I’ve been writing about on this site for years.  Have they even heard of this site1?  Do they think I’m some sort of stalker psycho?

Are they shocked to find out I’m actually a real person?

Despite my misgivings, the reality of most of my interactions with people have been nothing but positive.

Hearing many positive words from climbers, industry folks and random readers really inflates my ego makes me feel like what I’m doing here actually has a purpose.

This continued over the Nor’easter weekend as I was fortunate to meet several more people in the industry, including many of the athletes competing in the comp.  I also had the pleasure of meeting Dave Graham, one of my favorite climbers beginning way back when I started climbing last century.  It was pretty entertaining trying to get him to explain the history of alleged hold chipping on Dreamtime in 200 words or less2.

Of course there is a more interesting side to diving into a weekend with people in the industry, as many of the days quickly devolve into a series of “off the record moments” at after parties, bars, etc.  One can’t help but hear loads of gossip and he said, he said stories that, while amusing, I do my best to forget as I climb out of the pool and get back to my comparatively uninteresting life here in Wisconsin.

Now I’m back in Wisconsin, the best month of the year starts tomorrow…and I screwed up my knee at the gym last night after bashing it into a bolt hanger.  So yeah, my life is right back to normal…

  1.  In the case of Tommy Caldwell, the answer was no.  Oops.
  2.  Not surprisingly, it took more

Just about how there have been some apparent modifications to a few key holds over the years. Of course the story is much better when he tells it. Guess I should bring a camera next time.

Also, it was great to meet you last weekend as well.  I hope that your skin recovered from that 3-day-on beatdown you put it through!
