Burst Rock is by no means a new climbing area. This granite wonderland is home to some of the state's best traditional routes. However, it was not until fairly recently when climbers began to look beyond the cliffs and into the talus field. Picture Lincoln Lake in Colorado, only, 3 times the size. The amount of perfect granite that lies in this one single valley would be enough to keep Dave Graham busy for a lifetime. Well, maybe not that long.
On one of my last weekends in California, before moving to Boulder, CO, I decided to go check it out and see for myself just how good the rock was. I was only there for a day, and only climbed a few boulders, but I can say with conviction that Burst Rock is one of the most underdeveloped, undervalued, overlooked, and most valuable climbing destinations in North America.
It's worth the hike.
