A few weeks back Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell blazed up the South Face of Mt. Watkins, the Freerider on El Cap and the Regular Northwest Face on Half Dome in a 21 hour push.

Obviously an impressive feat, but at the time Honnold indicated that he had a bigger objective in mind.
In the ensuing weeks, Honnold free soloed the West Face of El Cap and did the Regular Northwest Face on Half Dome solo with a few points of aid in 1 hour 22 minutes. Not bad. But not finished.
Via the Reel Rock Tour’s Facebook page comes word that Honnold went and linked Watkins, The Nose on El Cap and the Regular Northwest Face on Half Dome by himself..in about 18 hours:
Wow! Just finished covering one of Alex Honnold’s most epic adventures for REEL ROCK 7 – The Solo Triple Crown in about 18 hours. Watkins, El Cap, and Half Dome, 90% free solo with a little bit of aid.

Yesterday he started up Watkins at 4PM and topped out in 2:20, a speed record in itself. Next was The Nose, in 6 hours, in the dark. He forgot his chalk bag and had to borrow one from aid climbers half way up.

Topped out Half Dome at 10:45 this morning. Here he is looking worked on the summit an hour ago. “OK,” he finally admitted, “that was a big deal.”
Look for this story as part of this fall’s Reel Rock Film Tour.
Ok, so maybe now he’s finished? Perhaps, but there are rumblings that Honnold is gearing up to have a go at the Nose speed record with Hans Florine. Stay tuned…
Update: More in this TNF interview
It’s cool, but I’ll be way more psyched after I eat something.
More than rumblings, Narc. They made several training runs end of last season before getting shut down by weather. 45 seconds short of the record or something ridiculously close. Another attempt is inevitable, not to mention Honnold has been plugging Hans Florine’s Facebook page with his training updates. Photos from their last attempt on elcapreport.com are great:

I believe the Honnold and Hans are going for the nose record on the 17th.
From Facebook:
“Hans are you going to let us know your expected Nose climbing dates?”
Hans Florine: “morning of June 17th , highly probable.”

Kinda silly that they are going for it on a Sunday in June. June might be the most crowded time on el cap, and I bet there will be many, many parties on the wall that day. I know it doesn’t impact them very much since they are going so fast they just pass everyone else. However, the nose speed record is a game of minutes, even seconds, these days and they are certainly risking losing small changes of time because of gumbies having an epic on the king swing or great roof. Seems kinda ridiculous to go on what could easily be one of the most crowded days on the nose of the season. I would at least wait till the week day so that the desk jokey aren’t an issue.

45 seconds short of the record is close, but if you consider the potter lost about 3-4 mins jamming his accender they will need to be fast
