Chris Sharma To Join Dawn Wall Team

So…this is happening (maybe…hopefully) :

Chris Sharma will join Tommy Caldwell, Kevin Jorgeson, and Jonathan Siegrist for this fall’s attempts on the Dawn Wall, a multi-year project to create the world’s hardest big-wall free climb. The team will begin working on the Dawn Wall this week, pending resolution of the federal government shutdown, which has closed Yosemite National Park.

I’ll be honest, I did a triple take and checked the date on my calendar when I saw this.

Not because I don’t believe that Sharma could excel at this sort of thing, but rather because this is an insane team of climbers to have together on the wall.

Add Dave Graham to the mix and my head might explode.

This leaves us no choice, call your congressman and demand they support Dawn Wall 2013.

*Checks Calendar*…nope, not April 1st. Is this for real? I can’t imagine Sharma being able to do much on this route. Regardless, looking forward to updates. J-Star and Jorgeson are great for this route.

Sharma is going to absolutley dominate up there. That thing is all tiny holds, crazy underclininging, terrible feet, and dynos? These are all things that Sharma has been the one of the best in the world at for years and years. For christ’s sake, its not like they are climbing a snow covered offwidth in patagonia here…

Honnold would make more of a “dream team” member for this route (or either of the huber brothers, for that matter) – but it should be cool to see how things go down with this team. Cool! Best of luck to them! And the US govt just makes me angry…

I agree with higglif and I don’t think Honnold would actually be a good choice for this team. As he stated they already have a multipitch specialist who has a far more impressive tick list, single pitch difficulty wise. They need more power and inspiration not really logistics.

Heard those same words from Tommy Caldwell over the weekend at the face lift. He also implied there would be some dank green encouragement strategically placed on the wall.

Please tell me cameras will be rolling on this one. This could make one spectacular film. And I think Sharma could add quite a bit to this team. Yosemite big walls may be less familiar to him, but there aren’t many people with 15a 15b and 15c in their credentials, that kind of power and ability may be just the thing to tackle a route of this nature, regardless of style.

It is obvious that if Sharma gets psyched on something he gives it everything he has. Don’t forget that both Jorgeson and Seigrist had no big wall or multipitch experience coming into the Dawn Wall. Jorgeson was a boulderer and Seigrist a sport climber. Sharma has more experience than these guys coming in. When he was a teenager he climbed the 5.13 variation on the Rostrum (see 50 favorite climbs) and in Kinglines he climbs Moonlight Buttress with little effort. Super psyched for this.

I thought Moonlight, a 5.12+ jam fest, actually gave Chris a bit of trouble…though I could have bad info.

This is a close to the marvel avengers as I’ve seen in this universe. And to follow that train of thought: honnold is not a logical choice for this team, you already have a multipitch specialist, who is struggling on the hardest moves, in all honesty, i think if they added ashima, theyd be unstoppable.

Super cool. Doesn’t sharma have a big wall project in Spain? Maybe he’s looking to learn some big wall skills from TC? And is the park actually closed? Wild stuff

Sharma mentioned working on some big wall projects in Spain at the end of the “La Dura Dura” segment of Reel Rock 7. He says, “My dream is to find a big wall that has 5.15 climbing on it. Seems like, for now, I found one right in my backyard. So, that’s the obvious place to start, and I’m super psyched to see where it takes me.” Apparently, it’s taking him to the Dawn Wall project (if the parks open up in time).

Time to flood the valley. As soon as sharma eyes up the dawn wall as a deep water solo proj, he’ll cruise the thing in no time.

I simply can’t wait to follow this. I’ve closely followed each of TC and company’s attempts thus far and have an old man gut feeling that this will be a good Fall. All I ask is for as much coverage as possible without distracting this stellar crew.

The first thing I thought of when I read this is the clip from Masters of Stone IV where fifteen year-old Sharma and TC are playing rock-paper-scissors to see who climbs first.

Even a long time ago Chris Sharma crushed the hardest boulder problems in the Valley, the Dawn Wall is just s series of those similar type move boulder problems. So people are wondering how he’ll do? That seams crazy, he flashed a 5.13 roof crack there a long time ago and he is way stronger now. TC and Sharma also go way back so they will have something to build off of. KJ had way less trad and big wall experience than Chris Sharma and less experience of California granite and did great. Chris is just so dang strong I am sure he is going to have an impact.

It’s quite a sausage fest up on the dawn wall. I think it would be served if you got Sasha and Ashima up there. Pepper in Anna Stohr, Alex Puccio, and then cap off the team with Megos and Gary Busey.
