DiGiulian, Vorotnikov Win 2012 SCS Nationals

DiGiulian, Vorotnikov Win 2012 SCS Nationals

The 2012 edition of SCS Nationals went down over the weekend at Boulder, Colorado’s Movement Climbing+Fitness with two familiar names coming out on top.  For the women it was Sasha DiGiulian flashing the finals route en route to winning for the third straight year and Vasya Vorotnikov, who has been working his way back from a shoulder injury for some time, winning on the men’s side.

Rounding out the top three for the women were Delaney Miller and Michaela Kiersch.  Kiersch has been spending time in the Red River Gorge of late where she has had success in onsighting several hard 5.12’s/easy 5.13’s.

Rounding out the top three for the men were Dylan Barks and Daniel Woods.  Barks, just 17, is still relatively unknown nationally but he has climbed as hard as 5.14c in the Red River Gorge.  And Woods, well, I think you all probably know quite a bit about him already.

Look for the LT11 highlight reel to be posted here within the next few days, and I will continue to update this post as other reports/pictures/videos are posted.

Just want to add a note that Kyra Condie and Noah Ridge are from the Midwest, specifically the twin cities. Kyra is 15 and this is her first SCS Open nations and comes on the heels of winning the youth A category at the 2012 ABS Youth Nationals in March. Noah has been quietly destroying the Midwest, and has represented the USA in international youth sport climbing in the past.

The route-setting really made for a great show, (nice gymnastic moves! and lots of alternate sequences) except what was with making the women do 5 moves to get to a clip, and then reverse themselves? I know it made them get some extra climbing in, but it seemed more than a little contrived, and one climber was DQ’d for skipping the extraneous clip, and I did feel bad for her.

Having the men and the women climb simultaneously shortened the night, and left no down-time, but it was frustrating to miss what each climber was doing, when I was watching the other one.

WOW the levels have gone up since I was climbing nationals!!! (in the dark ages)

I noticed you overlooked an up-and-coming hot-shot in your listing of the 2012 Men’s SCS Finalists. 16-year-old Dominic “Dominator” LaBarge rocked the odds-makers by taking 8th in Sport and 5th in Speed! After another trip to the Red River Gorge this summer, (http://roamready.tumblr.com) where lately he’s been crushing 5-13’s like they’re wobbly teenagers, he’ll be tearing it up again at the World Championship in Paris, France. He’s still got a few more years to compete in the Youth series, so watch for him in Atlanta at SCS Youth Nationals, as well.

Based on the Pure Imagination video, didn’t she want to go to Columbia University?

An interesting fact – Dylan Barks (17), Josh Levin (18) and Jacquelyn Wu (15) are all youth climbers coached by Scot Jenerik, US Team and Zero Gravity Team Coach.

Speaking of Sasha, I saw her in the gym (Earth Treks Rockville) last week and the thing that amazed me most about her is that she falls…a lot! It really goes to show that improvement won’t come if you are too proud to jump on routes that will spit you off in front of your peers.
