Video-ish Friday: 2010 Reel Rock Film Tour DVD

Looking for the perfect stocking stuffer for the climbing addict in your life? Then look no further than the 2010 Reel Rock Film Tour which is now available on DVD and digital download.

Unlike previous years which saw either Big Up or Sender Films debut a feature-length climbing movie like Progression or The Sharp End, this year’s tour featured 6 shorter films that I think did a good job appealing to a broad audience with their diversity. If watching Daniel Woods, Paul Robinson or Chris Sharma throw themselves at the hardest climbs possible doesn’t do it for you then maybe watching Lisa Rands step out of her comfort zone with Peter Croft on the beautiful Incredible Hulk is something that might interest you. Otherwise there are plenty of laughs to be had watching the likes of James Pearson, Matt Segal, Cedar Wright and Heidi Wirtz epic in Australia and Tasmania, or you can watch Ueli Steck race his way up the Eiger literally one misstep from certain death.

2010 Reel Rock Tour Films

  • The Hardest Moves – Daniel Woods & Paul Robinson pushing to complete the “hardest boulders ever scaled”
  • First Round First Minute – Chris Sharma’s “epic battle” with the well-known Margalef testpiece
  • The Swiss Machine – Ueli Steck’s quest to “take his one-man alpine speed game to the largest, highest walls in the world”
  • Origins: The Hulk – Peter Croft & Lisa Rands attempting a “wild free ascent on the Incredible Hulk”
  • Down and Out, and Under – Exploring wild climbing in Australia & Tasmania with James Pearson, Matt Segal, Cedar Wright and Heidi Wirtz
  • Fly Or Die – Dean Potter’s “extreme vertical exploration”

In addition to the 6 short films the DVD also includes the following bonus features:

  • Various Reel Rock Film Tour winners from over the years
  • Beth Rodden & Tommy Caldwell climbing in the Grand Canyon
  • A brief clip of Ueli Steck and Alex Honnold climbing Separate Reality (5.12) in Yosemite, CA. One of them does it with a rope and one doesn’t. I’ll let you guess which is which.
  • A nice piece following Daniel Woods and Paul Robinson at the 2010 Bouldering World Cup in Vail, CO which happened to be won by Woods

There are a few places to get the DVD for $29.95, one of which is Bouldering.com where you can get free shipping and a free M-16 climbing brush if you order by Monday. Otherwise Big Up and Sender Films have the DVD and the downloads available at their respective stores. The download will set you back $19.95 and 1.6 GB of hard drive space for the movie itself with the extras being an additional $6.95 and 1 GB.

Great DVD! I enjoyed watching the whole thing. Not that I don’t want to see a longer format video but, the shorter clips really worked out well.

Was able to make it to the MPLS stop of the film tour. Amazing videos, I really thought the shorter format was interesting too.

Loved all of these movies when I went to go see it a few weeks back. I really enjoyed watching Ueli, Dean and Lisa as they were aspects of the sport I haven’t been exposed to as much. Not to say that the features on Daniel, Paul and Chris weren’t interesting, they were amazing as usual.

Anyone know the song used in this trailer? I really enjoyed this track and many of the others in the movies.

It’s more likely that I’m missing something, but I noticed something weird in The Hardest Move. It was noted in several places that Daniel Woods sent The Game on the same day that he broke a hold at the crux. Thing is, the footage of the hold breaking and the final send have him wearing completely different outfits. Did he go and change at some point, or are we not seeing the actual send?

I don’t think the footage of either Daniel or Paul were from their actual sends.
