Tune in to Nat Geo at 8 PM EST this Sunday to catch Dean Potter doing his thing: highlining, free soloing, BASE jumping and even climbing with a rope1. As you can see in the second preview clip below, some of the free soloing includes soloing on the upper reaches of El Cap which isn’t something that happens every day2. After you watch the videos be sure to check out this incredible image Mikey Schaefer captured of Potter highlining on Cathedral Peak. Wow.
Update: Outside has more details on what exactly it was that Potter was doing up on El Cap without a rope
- Since it’s climbing on TV I didn’t think the use of ropes was allowed except for in commercials ↩
- Or ever?? ↩
Thanks for sharing this… the 1st person POV while Dean is walking across the chasm took my breath away….

Wow. That Free Rider footage is incredible. Only Dean would also go across Thanks Giving ledge to get to the “start” instead of rapping in directly to Round Table ledge… Way rad! I’ve been wondering when Dean will base solo that route. I guess this is step one.

How many pitches up the route is that?

Base soloing offwidth? sounds like a good way to grind a hole in the chute

So intense.

about 25 pitches up

The round table ledge is the same height as the base of the headwall. There is incredible exposure since there is 2000 feet of air…
