5.14d Birthday Present For Charlotte Durif

Literally as she was turning 21 years of age France’s Charlotte Durif redpointed PPP (5.14d) at Grotte de Galetas in France’s Verdon Gorge according to a posting on her website.  First done in 2010 by Adam Ondra, PPP is Durif’s first 5.14d making her likely only the second woman, after Josune Bereziartu, to ever climb a pitch given that grade.  Durif had previously done a couple of 5.

14c’s including these two she did the FA of back in 2009.

Update:  Much has been made in a thread on 8a.nu about the fact that almost all European news outlets have not reported this news.  Cedric from the French site Kairn.com explains the reasoning behind this action in a comment posted below:

As we discovered that Charlotte is lying a lot about her claims, we decided with other website part of CWN (Climbing Web Network) such as UKClimbing, Belclimb, Klettern…) not to post anymore about her claims if we have no independent witness.
Several elements makes us think that again she did not do what she claims.
Even Beal and Petzl, her sponsors, did not post about her 8c onsight.

She is strong, very strong. But she (and her father most of all) is lying too much.

Hey Narc, I’ve seen that 8a has already raised the question my seemingly all climbing media is ignoring that ascent. I dont like participating in discussions at 8a, because you always get the same people that just take any chance to attack Jens., so that’s why I ask you 😉 Anyway, I also think it’s very strange that non of the other major news sites don’t report that ascent – not even Kairn… Any thoughts?

I was just reading that as well. Pretty curious really. I wonder what the people at Kairn know that we don’t?

Strange to say the least. Seems like the big European sites know things that the American ones don’t – and are not willing to share their reasoning. Whatever the story is, totally ignoring the most outstanding achievement in  female sport climbing in many years cannot be the right solution. So UKC, Plantemoutain, Desnivel, Kairn, speak up! 😉

If you have reasons to doubt her achievements, why not report the ascent along with voicing your doubts about the validity of her claims?
I see no reason why you cannot post sth to the extent of “climber x claims to have done PPP 9a, potentially making her the  second woman to reach that grade.” and then ask her to back up that claim? That way you present the facts as objectively as you can and give people a chance to make up their own minds – not reporting only causes wild speculations and accusations (just check the 8a forum). As an example, when Bernabe claimed the 9b+, it was reported, various media voiced their doubts and people had facts to help decide if they wanted to believe it or not. Why not do the same in that case?
