Daniel Woods Opens The Game (V16)

Daniel Woods Opens The Game (V16)

In top form after the 3rd ascent of Terrmer (V15) Daniel Woods took his game to the next level Wednesday with the first ascent of the much hyped super project in Boulder Canyon.  Dubbed The Game, Woods suggested the lofty grade of V16 for this new problem.

Discussing the problem on the Big Up blog, Woods indicates that sending The Game took him at least 17 days of work in the past 2 years and that compared to other V15s he’s done The Game is “definitely another level”.  Woods had this to say about the problem on Cedar Wright’s blog:

I called this problem The Game, because for me the climb was a game I had to play, I had to click into game mode, and really train myself for these moves. I had to grow mentally strong and also physically strong to be able to put it together. I call it the game, because I played the game and I ended up winning the game so game over.

Wright, who is collaborating with the guys at Big Up, was on hand to capture the send on film.  A teaser should be up early next week on The North Face’s blog with the full send debuting at the 2010 Reel Rock Tour later this year.  Until then, here is a video Chad Greedy put together a few weeks back that shows Woods working the problem:

With The Game out of the way, Woods can now turn his attention to this weekend’s ABS Nationals competition in Alexandria, VA where he looks to defend the title he won in convincing fashion last year.  Can the routesetters set something hard enough for him this year??

In related Daniel Woods news, here is an excellent promo piece Joe Kinder put together for La Sportiva in which Woods explains why the La Sportiva Solutions are his favorite shoe.  If I hadn’t sold my soul to Five Ten in a secret ceremony several years ago I might actually consider getting a pair…

Woods is on a ROLL. Will be watching him compete this Saturday at ABS Nationals! Needless to say, I am incredibly stoked, and I randomly squeal and giggle like a schoolgirl in anticipation of this weekend.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but is this the first proposed v16 that isn’t a link up of some sort?

In the U.S. I suppose that’s accurate. In Europe I think it’s harder to say with all the V15/16 problems that have been proposed over the years.

Paul Robinson also downsizes his shoes an absurd amount as well. Perhaps they are onto something?

North Face athlete Cedar Wright(http://www2.thenorthface.com/na/athletes/athletes-CW.html), no wait, of Blue Water Ropes (http://vimeo.com/5943995), partnered now with Big Up, films Daniel Woods on the send after Chad Greedy (Dave Graham/Island) caught him projecting earlier and all followed up with a Joe Kinder La Sportiva marketing pitch. Anyone got a chart?

Does it bother anyone else that the North Face has plastered this kid with every possible piece of logo-laden gear imaginable? I understand that some degree of selling out is necessary to obtain sponsorship, but seriously, we get it already…

I think it bothers you that you can’t get unlimited free gear from TNF and have to pay for their expensive stuff. I’d wear that ALL the time if I could get it for free.

          *Sniffle*

I don’t really think that’s it. I have a small amount of gear that is adequate for what I do. There’s nothing that special about the stuff that Daniel is wearing in that video, a long sleeve shirt, hat, etc. He’s clearly wearing it at the request of his sponsors.

Aww. I’m sorry. Don’t cry. Its true. Its a sponsor thing, just like Jorgeson sporting the Five Ten Tee everywhere is also a sponsor thing (and I mean EVERYWHERE, he must have about 40 of them). I probably would be okay with wearing a tshirt for them though, and the hat is just because DW thinks he’s an OG (look it up on Urban Dictionary if you want).

I think, though, that if it was someone like Conrad Anker, I’d have my Freedom Insulated pants on over my base layer with a Free Thinker II shell and a fleece, and a hat, and a big tattoo on my butt, because getting all that stuff for free is SUPER ridiculously awesome.

I have a hard time begrudging any sponsored climber promoting his or her sponsors.

Oh, I wasn’t begrudging Daniel in any way. Certainly not. As far as I’ve seen, the kid is developing into a great role model and he’s obviously killing it out there on the rocks. I was more begrudging of North Face, but I meant it to be tongue-in-cheek…
