La Sportiva and Mountain Hardwear athlete Micah Dash paid Adventure Rock a visit this past Friday night. He shared with the gathered crowd stories and pictures from his travels around the world. The highlight was his most recent adventure that culminated in the first ascent of the Shaffat Fortress with Jonny Copp in the Kashmir region of India. You can read a bit more about their trip by checking out Copp’s blog (Great photos as well!).
Here in Wisconsin we don’t get the opportunity to have many prominent outdoor athletes come to speak, and out of the few that I have seen Micah’s was easily the best. His enthusiasm and humor complemented Copp’s professional quality photographs to make the entire slideshow a treat.

There was also pretty hilarious video footage (Copp running across a glacial river in his underwear) of a few parts of the trip that added nicely to the still images.
I know that many of the people in attendance (myself included) are hoping that his upcoming trip to Tibet is successful so that he has a reason to come back to the frozen wasteland that is Wisconsin.

Update June 2009: It is with great sadness that I have to update this post with the news that both Micah and Jonny appear to have been killed in an avalanche in China. Read more here.
I thought Micah was a fun guy to have come, and he did a great job of not downplaying the signifigance of big climbs and the inherent dangers, but he didn’t overkill sick little details of the process. He spoke to the reasons why they went, the challenges they faced, and even the elation they felt upon success. Even tho I’ll never climb that high, I felt I could really relate.
