'Why Echoes, it's a good question... It came from one of my first essays, also called echoes. This essay was an echo into my past life, a reverberation to and from the life I had made for myself. [...]
Echoes of a parallel life, of the life we were expected, or trained to live, but there, just on the periphery, just out of reach, is another life – a life – a much better life – the life we all hope to live, but not many do ... It's there, just there – bouncing, echoing around in everyone's head, but it is just that, an echo, a parallel never to be reached or experienced...'

Not saying this is the case with this guy in particular, but in my experience the perma-road tripping crowd consists of a high percentage of trustfunders and people from wealthy families. They just need to get by in life, working a bit here and there and not worry about retirement etc., because they know there’s a soft landing waiting for them when they get older.

I traveled for over a year from working very hard and saving. I was working seasonally so I wasn’t tied to a job or a particular location. During my road trip, I house sat and even worked 12 weeks to make it last. Best time of my life, no trust fund involved. In the end the road trip ended up more like being homeless living in my van, but that’s a different part of that story.
