Why do all the Island people smoke, and even if they inexplicably do, why does it show up in their videos? (e.g. Dave Graham, Daniel Woods)

Do these people know nothing about public health? How could this possibly be something that they would want to boast about to other people? It’s embarrassing. These are bright young people.

Do they think it’s cool because people say it’s “bad”? Because it’s not “bad” so much as it is just an unwise decision. For people who care so deeply about how their bodies function, it’s flabbergasting to me that they would then smoke. How cool is it going to be when they develop emphysema?

If they are going to smoke, and some people get hooked before they have fully developed brains, sure, I wish they would keep it to themselves. It’s disgusting to be at the boulders when someone lights up right next to you. A video like this, and like the other Island videos normalizes this behavior, and makes it more likely that the next time I’m out someone there is going to think it’s cool to smoke next to me. It’s not.

Go hang out in the waiting room of a pulmonology office or hospital unit for a half hour and then tell me it’s cool to smoke, and that you should put it in your rad climbing videos so that people can see you doing it.

??? There’s not even any smoking in this video. I wish there was because without it I can’t tell whether these climbers are “cool” or not. I guess they must not be.

Indeed there is. 3rd viewing was the ticket, I guess I’m unobservant. Anyways I guess it’s confirmed that Isabelle is cool, though perhaps sending V13 would be enough of a hint. Anyways I like this video.

you know they are smoking buds not cigarettes, and marijuana actually does the opposite of cause emphysema it can help emphysema patients with their symptoms and thier disease and a lot of the patients in the hospitals especially cancer patients here in Colorado use medical marijuana, so I’m sure they wouldn’t be too offended. Also marijana is not addictive so you can’t get “hooked” that’s not possible. And here marijuana usage especially at the crags is normal behavior and it is very excepted. If you can drink a beer at the crag we can enjoy ourselves too.

“and marijuana actually does the opposite of cause emphysema it can help emphysema patients with their symptoms and thier disease”

This struck me as an extraordinary claim, so I had to look into it a bit. After some reading, I have to conclude that basically you are wrong, but maybe not totally wrong.

Low dose marijuana, or maybe just the oil, or maybe just vaporized, might relieve symptoms or improve function in early COPD. That seems to be suggested by some of the literature, but the science on all this is pretty new. So nothing to hang your hat on, just to evaluate further.

While cannabis smoke is almost identical to cigarette smoke, it is apparently not strongly associated with the horrific consequences of cigarette use (cancers, COPD…). It IS associated with pulmonary symptoms, including “early morning sputum production, wheezing apart from colds, nocturnal awakenings with chest tightness, and exercise induced shortness of breath.” Further, microscopic changes in large/central airways are evident in chronic marijuana smokers…Contrasted to cigarette smokers, who see changes extending to peripheral airways.

Also of note, the large studies that show minimal association with significant disease with chronic cannabis use are controlled in such a way that they tend to exclude really heavy smokers. There are many case reports at this point that associate heavy smoking of marijuana to early onset emphysema (with no other apparent causes), primarily in patients under 40 (including some in their 20’s) and having a particular airway pattern very distinct from cigarette-associated emphysema.

        ………….

TLDR: I guess enjoy a little bit of marijuana, even daily, possibly with a chronic cough or something. Vaporizing might be better for you. Don’t get carried away, though, because it could still trash your lungs.

Inhaling ANY burning substance is detrimental to ones health. Different substances cause differing degrees of harm. That being said, do whatever the hell you want people!

I remember watching a video a while back where Daniel Woods mentioned something about how it helps him send? I doubt they do it just to look cool… I just hope they don’t leave their spent butts all over the ground.

From a hobby photographers perspective, smoke is interesting to shoot, it adds an element to the video/photograph, but a similar result/feel can usually be achieved with the giant clouds of chalk that boulderers tend to create pre-send.

Train high, send high, get high results. Smoking a joint in the woods in CO is legit. But… I absolutely agree with hating on anyone that lights up next to you without asking or leaves stubs around.

Everyone except for the RCMP officer that was around when my friend was asking if people had papers. He was climbing, not in uniform, and had a big stick up his butt (my friend was a-OK with the officer asking him not to smoke there, but he flashed his badge and acted all weirdly tough about it). His friends all looked super nervous when my friend asked them for papers too. I don’t smoke, but I found it hilarious on all counts.

maybe they should just not show smoking of any kind in their videos. these folks are heroes and role models to young gym crushers. fo sho I’m fine with the pot but only for adults who make the choice because they want to not because of peer pressure or because they think it will help them send. just look at a pipe that is full of resin. and its obvious that pot is un healthy. but so is whiskey that I’m enjoying right now.

Fair enough, the reality is that most gym climbers won’t go so out of there way to replicate – say Daniel Woods – that they smoke pot. That’s true. But, on the other hand, it doesn’t really add anything to Faus’ send except controversy. So, while it’s probably not harmful to add it, it’s probably wiser to just leave it out and skip on the hordes of pot-fearing elders.

Huh- no I actually didn’t know that they were smoking pot, not tobacco. I can see why this has taken kind of a reefer madness sort of flavor.

For me, when other people use marijuana or alcohol at the boulders it doesn’t affect my experience very much, so, at least in terms of my personal selfish goals of having a good time and performing well, it doesn’t bother me at all.

Tobacco smoke, on the other hand, is super gross for those around them (smokers always underestimate how far away they have to be), and I loathe the idea that I trained for months for my project and hiked 2 hours to get there at the best time of day only to show up and find someone filling the area around it with a poisonous tobacco miasma.

I choose to use caffeine and sugar at the crag, and not alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, for my own reasons, but I don’t think that makes me morally superior to others, or that I make the “right” choices.

As a separate point, I do think that these other substances can be hard on people. In my work, I’ve seen each of these substances (especially tobacco in terms of physical outcomes and alcohol in terms of mental, social, and physical outcomes), when used in excess, have significant negative impact on lives (and death of course). I wouldn’t wish those outcomes on anyone.

I admit that I would be thrilled if my words or actions at any point made it even slightly less likely that someone use a drug that could make their life shit. So I’m biased. Climbing is a passion, but so is the advocacy and empowerment part of my work.

Also, I’m impressed that this has remained so civil. I got pretty riled up when I wrote that first post, and the responses have been things that people would probably say to my face. So I respect that. Maybe the climbing narc lads and lasses are a notch above.

I stand by my point that I don’t think this should be in a climbing film where someone is killing it’s, as Faus is in this one. Media has a huge impact on us, and with the audience that these people have, which is considerable, they have a responsibility to think about how their media may affect other people, in both the positive and the negative ways.

I use to boulder on pot but didn’t really like to lead climb hi. But pot was a huge bonus to help me train. I stopped using when I got a job that required me to do such. Plus its illegal where I live. Also use to LOVE to road bike stoned. I do miss doing that for sure. I think it helps take your mind off the pain your in during endurance exercise. I would think how often a person smokes would play a part in whether being hi was a bonus to athletic movement. I use to smoke every day. So I knew what being hi was like in all situations.
