Don’t write off the 2013 Dawn Wall season just yet…
Dawn Wall 2013: So You’re Telling Me There’s A Chance
→ Tommy Caldwell Injured, Off Dawn Wall Project∞
Tommy Caldwell, writing on The Facebook:
Disaster strikes! Haul bag took a 200 plunge while clipped to the back of my harness.

Hauling hook fail. It was a bit jarring. Looks like a costochondral seperation. I am headed home to try and heal as quickly as possable.
Best of luck to Tommy as he recovers.

What this means for the 2013 effort on the Dawn Wall is unclear, but between the 16 day government shutdown and this, the odds of the route going this year don’t look real great from here.

→ Chris Sharma To Join Dawn Wall Team∞
So…this is happening (maybe…hopefully) :
Chris Sharma will join Tommy Caldwell, Kevin Jorgeson, and Jonathan Siegrist for this fall’s attempts on the Dawn Wall, a multi-year project to create the world’s hardest big-wall free climb. The team will begin working on the Dawn Wall this week, pending resolution of the federal government shutdown, which has closed Yosemite National Park.
I’ll be honest, I did a triple take and checked the date on my calendar when I saw this.

Not because I don’t believe that Sharma could excel at this sort of thing, but rather because this is an insane team of climbers to have together on the wall.

Add Dave Graham to the mix and my head might explode.
This leaves us no choice, call your congressman and demand they support Dawn Wall 2013.

Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson add a third member to their team for the Fall 2012 effort to free climb El Cap’s Dawn Wall
Caldwell’s Dawn Wall Push Over…For Now
In an update on his Facebook page yesterday Tommy Caldwell indicated that he’s given up the hope of completing his Dawn Wall project in a single push, instead opting to go down to the ground to recuperate before returning to his current highpoint to forge higher. After over two weeks on the wall he was able to match his highpoint of pitch 12 from last year but was unable to send pitch 13 despite a prolonged battle.
Update: Caldwell returned for a brief attempt on Pitch 13 but decided to pack up and head home for the season:
In so many ways, free-climbing El Cap seems absurd and contrived. But it drives me in a way that I love, satisfying a deep-rooted curiosity. A need to explore not only what I see, but who I am.

I choose to immerse myself in this project again and again because it stretches my imagination and reminds me that I am capable of much more that I am usually aware of.

It would be empty without the allure of success. But it doesn’t always end that way.
