Adam Ondra Nominated For Adventurer Of The Year

Nice interview with Adam Ondra by Fitz Cahall as part of Ondra’s being nominated for Nat Geo’s Adventurer of the Year:

I think sport climbing is still a relatively young sport. Not so many people are really focused into really structured and sophisticated training, and I think that there’s still a lot of room to improve. I can imagine, easily, routes 9c [5.15d], 10a [5.16]. I can describe them, and I think I have even bolted some of the climbs that could have such a grade.

Ondra, Kim Win In Valence

Adam Ondra puts the rest of the World Cup circuit on notice:

Valence in France: this was the stage chosen by Adam Ondra to celebrate his return to the Lead World Cup after three years of absence. And last night the 20-year-old from the Czech Republic could not have made a more convincing comeback, winning with the grit and class that enabled him, in 2009, to win the Lead World Cup in his debut year in senior competitions at a mere 16 years of age.

Sean McColl, who took 2nd for the men, has a nice recap of the event from his perspective that you can read here.  The full replay of the event can be seen here.

Three 5.14d’s In One Day By…Guess Who

Adam Ondra is set to compete in the upcoming Lead World Cups in Valence, France and  in Kranj, Slovenia, but before doing that he’s made a stop in the Frankenjura where he’s done three 5.14d’s in a single day according to his 8a scorecard.

He started off with a second go repeat of The Elder Statesman followed by a second go repeat of The House Of Schock, and then he finished up the trifecta with a repeat of Sever The Wicked Hand.  Not content, as usual, he then finished up the day with a second go repeat of Wut zum Leben (5.14b).

Not bad.

Adam Ondra’s Sabbatical

Nice interview with Adam Ondra reflecting on his 15 months as a full-time climber:

No, I wasn’t tempted to [postpone going to college to continue climbing full time]. Because I know that if I didn’t have to be home to study, it would be hard to persuade myself into hard training.

But as I have to go to school, it’s easier to stay in Brno and really train in a structured way.

I will be competing in the last two World Cup events this year mainly to regain the experience and to see how it feels like, but I will not be training especially for them.

More 5.15s In Norway By Adam Ondra (Again)

It looks like Adam Ondra’s season in Norway has come to an end, but not before he added two more 5.15s up there with the FAs of Hell Racer (5.15a) in Hell and Kangaroo’s Limb (5.15a) in Flatanger.  He comments about the latter on his 8a scorecard:

Another season in this beautiful cave is over for me. Many projects left behind. Left exit version of Kangaroo’s dyno project, the cheater’s one.

Dyno specialists, come and try it!

I could stick the dyno as a single move, but not very close to link.

At this point Ondra has pretty much lapped the field when it comes to the sheer volume of hard sport routes he has done.
