From the sounds of it people from all over the Climbingnarc.com reading area are getting crushed with snow this winter and here in southeast Wisconsin it is no different. We have already had twice as much snow as last year and this is the most total snow we have had in over ten years. Yesterday was the the biggest snowstorm in recent memory and we were hit with over a foot of new snow.

Needless to say, it has been a great winter for me to have gotten a set of snowshoes.
Now if there is one thing that I enjoy besides climbing and narc-ing, it has to be getting first tracks. Whether it is out on the lake wakeboarding or getting the first pitches in at Devil’s Lake, it has become somewhat of a joke between myself and Old School that we need to be the first people out. Maybe it is because there isn’t much else to do or we are just excited by the small victories in life, take your pick.
So I headed out to Lapham Peak*
yesterday for some snowshoeing, and I was thrilled when I arrived at the trailhead to see nothing but fresh, undisturbed powder. Talk about first tracks. Every step I took the entire hike was into fresh powder (save the occasional deer track) which was over a foot deep in some places.

Truly a great time even if it was more work breaking trail the entire way.
Now that Mrs. Narc finally received her snowshoes, we are both very excited to get out and take advantage of what little winter is left around here.

Yah, I’m not sure I need to be the first one up at the Lake, but first tracks in snow, or being the ony canoe out on the lake (in BWCA) is pretty awesome.
I never pursued the snowshoe thing ’cause we never have enough snow down here…with the sort of precognitional abilities you showed in gettign snowshoes…maybe you should start investing or gambling!

Yeah, it has been a rather opportune winter to finally get them. Mad props to the in-laws on that front.
Unfortunately I have had to swear off gambling in most forms due to a period of my college years where my climbingnarc obsessions were solely focused on online gambling…

YOu’re definitely right about the term “peak” being used loosely. I was rather disappointed the first time I went there when I discovered that the “peak” was mostly just the observation tower, although the tower itself is pretty cool.
