That One Time I Made A Semi Viral Climbing Video

The story behind that funny Reel Rock spoof you may have seen featuring a raccoon failing to ascend a feeder:

I shared it a couple times on my Facebook profile and page as well as Twitter. That was it. In the weeks since it has since amassed over 50k views from more than 130 countries. While those numbers may be paltry compared to Charlie Bit My Finger (590 million) or David After Dentist (120 million), those are quite large numbers within the climbing niche–compare it to Top Rope Tough Guys, for instance, at 85k views, the infamous Boogie Til You Poop video at 105k, or even the official Reel Rock 8 trailer with 200k views.

Educate For Access

Joe Kinder, on his time at the Educate For Access event held recently in New York:

In some ways I am the wrong person to speak about this… I mean HELL, I thought I knew all the etiquette and general do’s and don’ts… but like most of my friends… I didn’t.  Maybe this whole experience makes me the right person.

More On Alex Honnold’s Skyscraper Climb

Me, back in July when it was announced that Alex Honnold would be soloing a building on live TV this fall1:

Then again, Honnold has always struck me as being rather pragmatic and I’m guessing this sort of stunt pays a lot better than anything with actual rock climbing involved.

Alex Honnold, in the Outside Online article revealing that he will be climbing the 1,667 ft. tall  Tapei 101, the 2nd tallest skyscraper in the world:

Honnold won’t discuss specific figures, but he acknowledges that he’ll be paid “vastly more than anything I’ve encountered in the climbing world” for the project.

Makes sense.

The Professionals

Justin Roth, writing on The Stone Mind:

From what I’ve seen, however, the professional climber’s life is less glamorous than many imagine and more like the jobs that most of us work: full of trade-offs and sacrifices.

I found myself nodding my head in agreement throughout, recalling many experiences I’ve had these past few months living in the ultimate professional climber bubble.

White Noise Repeated By Paul Robinson

Paul Robinson has done the 4th ascent of Daniel Woods’ White Noise (V15) in Wild Basin, RMNP, CO, commenting on his 8a scorecard:

2 days. 4th ascent. had some of the most perfect climbing conditions on it ever today! hard 8b+ or easy 8c boulder? such cool climbing and a rad traverse! was good to still have some rumney endurance for the top!

Update:  The following day Robinson returned to Wild Basin where he repeated The Grey (V14).
