Tony Scott

I told myself I wouldn’t link to Rock & Ice until they made the font on their site more readable, but Alison Osius’ piece on her connection to Tony Scott, the acclaimed movie director who took his own life last weekend, is well worth reading:

Scott survived soloing Cenotaph Corner, but jumped off the 185-foot Vincent Thomas Bridge, Los Angeles Harbor. At midday, knowing what he was doing. He was a gutsy man. He loved the same things we all do. Space, and sharing the high outdoors, and focus.

I totally agree on the font issue, it’s unreadable. I usually end up using Safari’s “Reader” feature or Instapapers “Text” version.

For a magazine with such an incredible layout, the website is pretty disappointing.

You can’t blame them I suppose, but they seem to dedicate more screen real estate to ads than their content. There are 5 ads visible on the linked to article alone. And don’t get me started on the splitting up of an article like this that isn’t very long onto two pages.

Then again, most of the climbing magazine websites have pretty poor designs

Isn’t it odd? In a day where it seems so easy to make an attractive site on the cheap. Climbing’s site hasn’t changed much in probably 10 years.

Pretty clear that the website is not a very high priority for them

It seems to have gone by the wayside here folks go after Rock and Ice, but Alison wrote a touching piece about Tony Scott, a climber, a fine American filmmaker and a man who, sadly enough, couldn’t go on. RIP Tony.

Well said. A sad story, and a touching piece by Osius.

I met Tony when I was the Post PA on the pilot for Num3ers. I had to deliver dailies to his beach house in Malibu. I was buzzed in to the compound by his wife but when I entered I couldn’t find anyone. This was more than alarming as I had been repeatedly lectured / instructed about how to conduct myself in the presence of Hollywood “A-List” greatness. There was always supposed to be someone there. Went to the office above the garage, the music was playing but no one was there. Went in the front door, no one answered my calls of “hello?, hello?” Stood in the courtyard waiting for a while, the place was deserted. Then I saw another door. It was open so I went in and found myself in a large indoor / outdoor living area, and two largish dogs were coming at me! Turns out they were friendly so I stood there petting the dogs for a few minutes feeling kind of dumb and wondering where the heck is everyone?! Finally, Tony comes up a set of stairs, apologizing because he was playing with his sons on the beach. He was very gracious about finding me roaming his house. I gave him the dailies. We talked about climbing for a moment and then I was off.
