This week’s edition of Video Friday is brought to you unofficially by Rock/Creek’s spring sale on Five Ten shoes. Shop through this link to receive at least 15% off a wide selection of Five Ten shoes and a portion of each sale will help support the continued operation of this site. I highly recommend the Quantums which are quickly becoming my go-to shoe when I need to put on my try hard face on pretty much any terrain other than the steepest of roofs.
Update: Rock/Creek also has nice sales going for Sterling ropes, shoes and Black Diamond gear as well. The sale ends Monday so don’t delay!

Stupid FiveTen no longer making V10s… My pair just got wrecked by a single jib in a gym. I was devastated.
You should start doing themed video fridays and stop this whole “best video” thing.

My last pair is just about done too. Sad days ahead…

I have a pair of never-worn V10s that i picked up several years ago. Size is 9.5. I really wanted to use them, but they are too big for me, so I never did. I know there are a lot of fans of the V10 out there, so if somebody is interested, I’d be happy to sell them. Brand-new, never used, I hate to see these just sit there. contact me: arammarks at gmail.

I would totally be interested! haha

Hey Narc,
What’s up with the ‘low volume’ heal cup on the Quantums? Is that meant for people with ‘special’ feet or is that helpful to give better hooking traction for everyone?

I could be wrong about this, but I think it’s just a move away from the boxier heel that used to be on the old Anasazi velcro and lace ups. The old heel resulted in a fair bit of dead space so I don’t think you need to be special to wear these. Just prepare to be awesome if you do.

Any recommendations on sizing the 5.10 Hornets? Only 5.10s I’ve climbed in over the past couple of years have been the Mocs. I wear a 9.5 in those and wondering if anyone has any advice on possibly sizing the Hornets? Much appreciated if any one has feedback, thanks.

In my experience 5.10 sizing is kind of all over the place. I wear a 7.5 Mocc, a 10.5 Dragon, and a 9ish (can’t remember) Blackwing. I would consider it necessary to try on different sizes and see what works, you probably won’t be able to guess successfully. Keep in mind that the unlined leather Moccs stretch a bunch if you size them tight, while a synthetic shoe like the Hornet will undergo little to no stretch.
And while we’re on this topic, does anyone have an opinion on the Hornet? I see virtually no one wearing them and I can’t tell what niche they are supposed to fill.

Thanks for the feedback. But yeah, that’s the thing, I don’t see anyone wearing them, nor have I ever found them in any gear shops in order to try on and get an idea of sizing and feel.

I too rock the quantums, and I love the lower volume heel. I have tried on most of the newer five ten shoes including the black wings and dragons. They seem to be fitting much truer to street size these days. I would size them 1/2 size down from you street shoe for a nice snug fit, or a full size down if you like them painfully tight.
As for the hornets, I believe they have softer rubber than the quantums. They are also a bit more sensitive too. However, if you are climbing in a gym a lot, this means they will probably not hold up as long. Last, I think they had a bit more room in the heel than the quantums too.
I will end by stating that I was converted from sportiva solutions to quantums. Both are great shoes, but I love my quantums more. I hope this helps.

Correction, by dragons in the above post, I meant hornets. I have not tried the dragons. Sorry for the confusion.

the hornet is sort of a sensitive dragon.. (read this aloud)
it has mystique rubber and is downturned further.
it works well for steep roofs on slick stone and for techy heel hooks.
a great RMNP shoe, or something for steep limestone.

scoop up the 5x’s while they’re still around. it’s a Mocc with the old anasazi heel and a zipper and velcro strap. hands down the best 5.10 i’ve ever worn. i have three sitting in the box in the beastment. i use these ALWAYS over my last pair of V10’s, and Solutions. Thank god…. i’m really pushing the life of the V10’s, but i now find them inferior to the 5x and they’re no where near downturned.
I more or less gave up on 5.10, especially since they discontinued the 5x.
