Rock & Ice’s Top 10 Ascents Of 2011

Rock & Ice unveils their countdown of the top 10 ascents of 2011.  One could certainly quibble with the ordering of things, but I think it’s pretty clear that 2011 was the opposite of a failure for everyone on the list.

Nice list with a good amount of variety. I like that they tried to represent as many disciplines as possible (sport, bouldering, trad, ice/mixed, alpine, expedition, big-wall, and soloing are all there).

Pretty much everything I could think of from the top of my head as being a big deal made the list.  Seeing how different the disciplines involved are, I don’t think order matters much here.  The one surprise for me was the absence of the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum II, which was pretty impressive to me, even in the honorable mentions (haven’t seen COLD, but I want to).

I don’t know about Terranova as the bouldering representative on that list. Yeah, it’s probably the hardest boulder FA this year, but Ondra said that it’s the same difficulty as Gioia and that shit got climbed three years ago. Not exactly breaking new ground there. Woods’ flash of Entlinge is the only send this year that really shocked me when I heard about it. Ondra’s Gecko Assis flash might have shocked me too, but I’m no longer surprised by anything that kid climbs.

Yes indeed, probably more shocking news would be Ondra didn’t manage to climb X on which he spent massive 10 minutes!!!
