I first read about the rumors of a new rock gym coming to Boulder, CO a few months ago in an FRB article about the Spray Premier in Boulder. Given the fact that there are already 3 gyms in Boulder (Boulder Rock Club, CATS, and The Spot) combined with the year round outdoor climbing possibilities that most people can only dream of, I found it a bit odd that there could even be a market for a 4th gym. However, at the time of the Spray Premier Mike Moelter confirmed for FRB that it was something they were working on:
Hopefully so. We’re working on it real hard. We got a good team put together. We’re trying to bring it to fruition
Now comes confirmation from Mike at FRB that the new Boulder gym is going to become a reality:
It’s official
there’s a new rock gym coming to Boulder!
It’s called Movement
climbing & Fitness center
It’ll have 14,000 square feet
of climbing surface…
I can’t say that I really know all that much about the gym scene in Boulder, but it should be interesting to see how things play out with the new facility. Hopefully it will be better suited for hosting large Nationals type crowds than The Spot is…
Wow. If only we had the “problem” of abundant gyms and climbing out here on the peninsula in Washington… We’re struggling to keep our one gym open… Anybody interested in helping out? Email me if so and I’ll put you in touch with the right folks.Sara.

had the same problem in my home town a few years back. there were 2 commercial gyms when i moved there and 0 within the span of a year. my advice would be to start a co-op (or just find some motivated friends) and build your own bouldering wall. you can tailor problems for your projects, drink beer while making fun of your friends, and don’t have to worry about (for instance) someone else’s gambling problem ridding you of your single source for mid-week pump.

I was a member of the bizarre Boulder gym scene for a couple months. At the BRC, the crowd was older and not overly friendly and on cold weeknights, I would have to stand in line for each route. The Spot is younger and more laid back although cliquey. After seeing how crowded the BRC can get, it’s believable another gym could succeed. It was interesting to see the difference between the Colorado and Wisconsin gym community. Essentially, the midwest is way more friendly. From my experience, small talk is not as easy to come by there.

John, You hit the nail on the head one your descriptions for both gyms. I have been a part of the “scene” since ’95. There are alot more climbers new to the sport who are climbing at the BRC and it is a nice change for the old guard elite.. There are friendlier and excited about climbing like we all used to be before we became “cool”
