i don’t know why, but I just don’t enjoy Paul robinson videos- the guy is a great climber, but i just never get psyched watching him. DWoods, Graham, Nalle- there is so much energy and enthusiam watching these guys boulder- they get pissed off, they get excited- Paul just seems kinda ho-hum, and boring always.

I was with you until the they get pissed version. As much as I appreciate Dave’s vision, his recent videos have turned me off. I understand that climbing can be frustrating, but when it starts to eat into you to the point that you’re just shouting f-bombs every time you come loose, I think you need to re-evaluate. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had days like that, but now when I see it coming on, when I feel my vibe getting dark, I take a step back and try to let it go. If I can’t I move on. Forcing yourself to go at it again and again when you are nigh on tantrums makes me wonder what motivates you.

Dave is motivated by finding, cleaning and sending new lines. There is nothing odd, surprising, unusual or sinister about that.

He gets very invested in what he does, and he lets his emotions show. You or I may not do that, but I’m not about to think less of the guy because he does.

Absolutely agree. Getting frustrated is one thing, but turning into a screaming/cursing child every time you don’t send v15 on your third go isn’t how it should be. Respect for his vision and dedication; I just wish he had a better way to deal with his frustrations that set a reasonable example for those watching.

So what if Paul is the joe flacco of climbing. His resume speaks for itself. What that said, wouldn’t you call Fred a bump on a log just the same? I’ve never seen Fred change his temperment in video, and the one time I had the pleasure of being in his presence, working (and falling) on terremer, he never once lost his cool.

    So, they’re borefests, who cares?

although the dialogue coming from paul in his videos always sounds so scripted and dull, i think it is a mistake to think that just because someone is not getting angry when they climb that they lack passion or are boring. i quite liked this video because it is at times refreshing to see some bouldering/boulderers who are able to focus on and enjoy the movements and not just the send. watching someone get passionate and loud when they are trying really hard is inspiring but watching someone throw a tantrum because they blew the send is annoying.

Let’s face it, very few guys in their mid-20s have wonderful on-screen personalities. They are barely adults, so most interviews with 20-something climbers are cringe-inducingly awful. The only fun people are the weirdos (Dave Graham, Johnny Dawes and many other Brits) and the seasoned uber-veterans (Lynn Hill, Peter Croft, Dani Andrada, etc.)

I would have loved to watch this video but I fell asleep after the first two minutes… Lets face it Paul is never going to be the lead singer of the band…

I thought the video was a nice tour of an area (climbing and otherwise) that has not received a lot of exposure in the U.S. Was it the most exciting video ever made? No, but it at least it was done in a thoughtful manner that strove to produce a quality end product.

In my opinion most of the problems didn’t look that inspiring. Some were low balls and that 8b+ looked ugly. I’ve been spoiled by the amazing footage of DG and Nalle in Austrailia, the Rocklands stuff, and the new linds in CO. I just kept thinking, “why would i plan a trip to italy to climb on those boulders when there is so much other stuff in the world that is much more aesthetically amazing?”
