10th New River Rendezvous

Nice report over at DPM from the 10th New River Rendezvous:

What once started as a grassroots gathering of core climbers has grown over the past decade into one of the most well-executed climber fundraising events in the country. The money raised from the event goes directly back into the Park in the form of new fixed hardware and infrastructure such as trails, improved parking, and access.

REI CEO Nominated For Interior Secretary

All caveats about the broken nature of our government aside, this seems like it has to be good news:

President Obama on Wednesday nominated Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) chief executive Sally Jewell to head the Interior Department, praising her as a leader who “knows the link between conservation and good jobs.

The choice of Jewell, who began her career as an engineer for Mobil Oil and worked as a commercial banker before heading a nearly $2 billion outdoors equipment company, represents an unconventional choice for a post usually reserved for career politicians from the West.

Plaid Is Rad

I’m a little late with my standard disclaimer about how I’m not attending last week’s Summer Outdoor Retailer Trade Show in Salt Lake City, but if I had actually attended I would have undoubtedly been a prime candidate for Justin Roth’s collection of outdoor folks wearing the “unofficial uniform of Outdoor Retailer”.

Lacking Vision

Interesting thoughts from LT11’s Jordan Shipman as he reflects on feedback gleaned from their coverage of 2012 SCS Nationals:

Based on my experience in the industry, it seems to me these companies have demonstrated little to no interest in supporting these professional-scale events. The desire to invest in the future of our sport is marginal at best.

Putting The Blast In E-Blast

Jeff Jackson puts the blast back into Rock & Ice’s Tuesday Night Bouldering E-Blast with this response to Peter Beal’s pot-stirring post from last week:

But is climbing media destroying the sport? Here again I take issue with Beal’s assertions. Sure, there are plenty of examples of terrible writing, self promotion and feel-good bromides but overall climbing media’s endorsement of the culture of consumption is tame or, conversely, anti-consumption.

Interesting thoughts as well from Justin Roth:

Whenever I disagree strongly with an argument, I take it as a sign. It means that argument has hit a sore spot. And any sore spot we have within us is worthy of further examination. Beal’s critiques,  and the less-than-tactful means he chose to express them, certainly made an impression on me.
