So, this is happening:
The two-hour fall event, Live Climb With Alex Honnold, will feature the 27-year-old as he attempts to be the first to scale one of the tallest buildings in the world. (For safety reasons, the building will remain under wraps until closer to the climb.)
I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April Fools’ Day as this seems a bit odd on the surface. Then again, Honnold has always struck me as being rather pragmatic and I’m guessing this sort of stunt pays a lot better than anything with actual rock climbing involved.

good for him. i hope they are paying him a pile of money.

Love how his main focus is still movements and features. The raw love to climb. A building can still be awe inspiring as well. Crush it Honnold.

Once again rock climbing jumps the shark in the public eye.
Like sharma naked, vertical limit, 127 hours, and 80 year olds and playboy models “climbing” everest. But for honnolds sake, hope he does it safely, makes a pantload of cash and continues to push himself in real climbing with the proceeds.

Eureka! m00nshine, you’re an inspiration.
Hey, National Geographic! You should:
1) Get a deep pool filled with sharks
2) Position it under Honnold
3) Put it on risers that follow his progress
4) Place a broken jukebox on the roof of the building that Honnold can fix with a tap of his elbow
5) In non-Happy Days related hijinks, have Honnold climb through several rings of fire. Make sure you give him a treat afterwards as positive reinforcement.
6) Tell the Discovery Channel to go self-reproduce because this improved version will blow the Nik Wallenda special out of the water

I’m kind of hoping he just takes up sport climbing for the rest of his long life

Good for him.

I understand he wants to/ needs to make a living, but this is over the top. Definitely losing some respect for him after this. He’s making a mockery of his fame by performing something more on the level of David Blaine. This is crap.

How much does Lebron for each free-throw? For some reason when a climber makes a few bucks it’s selling out. So Alex is going to climb some dumb building, probably repeated 5.9’s, for an hour and make a modest amount of money. Keep in mind Alex is on the verge of freeing El Cap. Something he’s going to do fo free. Hope the cameras are around when that happens, cause that will be the greatest athletic feat of all time.

A lot of people have freed El Cap.

Losing some respect for him, yes. Catherine Destivelle in her time, indeed refused to climb La Tour Eiffel and other monuments, for the very reasons you rightly say. And it was Honnold himself who said about Alain Robert (the “French Spiderman”), that climbing buildings was too easy, and that Robert does it only because he is now severely disabled and suffers vertigo, after several climbing accidents during his career.
