Video Friday is back, but before we get to that I wanted to take a moment to discuss something I was thinking about the other day which is blogs that cater specifically to certain sub-sectors of the climbing community. These are blogs that, in effect, create their own small community around themselves. Certainly Jamie Emerson’s B3Bouldering blog would be one example as a blog that caters to the Colorado bouldering bubble scene, however the international prominence of his blog sort of puts it on a different level than the types of blogs I was thinking about. One example, and the one that got me thinking about this in the first place, was my friend Steve’s blog, Sicky Gnar Gnar.
Steve started the blog a few years back, and while on the surface you could call it a personal blog it really has evolved into something quite a bit more over the years.

For the admittedly small bouldering community that exists here in Wisconsin Sicky Gnar Gnar has become the de facto online hangout to talk shop, talk shit and get psyched about the climbing at local areas like Governor Dodge and Devil’s Lake. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the boulders of Devil’s Lake have gone from being a ghost town to a place where there is an actual sense of community among those who climb there. This is a good thing if you ask me, and I think Sicky Gnar Gnar has certainly played a big role in that.
What I’m ultimately curious about is if there are other such climbing blogs out there that have been able to build this sort of community around themselves. If you know of any, please share them in the comments.

Koanbouldering.com is a great resource for climbers in the Pacific Northwest (Leavnworth, Gold Bar, Index, etc.) They post a lot of media pretty regularly.

We started http://millcreekreport.blogspot.com/ expressly for the purpose you describe: to generate and promote community around a new sport climbing area a few of us have been developing. We hung a link of a PDF guide off the blog and include some of the more active climbers in our area in our blog list. The feedback we’ve received leaves no doubt that people are reading the blog and getting psyched about the climbing. It’s also our belief the blog played a large part in Mill Creek’s inclusion in Climbing No. 292 (March 2011) “best new crags” of 2010. Continuing with that community theme, we’ve also started to cover some regional climbing news, such as the upcoming opening of a new bouldering gym in Missoula. So, for sure, regional blog can play a big part in the local climbing scene.
