More On Ten Sleep Shooting

Climbing.com has a followup on the bizarre shooting that took place a few weeks ago in Ten Sleep, WY:

“We know not everybody is a bad guy, and we’ve gotten a lot of strong support from people,” Deaconu says. “It just seems unfair that you save up to travel to a foreign country, get shot, and now have to pay $50,000.”

As a nurse the outrageous medical bills that rack up during inpatient hospital stays are maddening, especially for those people who live modest, healthy lives and are contributing members in a community. I hope that the climbing community’s contributions to Ana and Juan add up in a profound way.

Yeah, sounds like america to me. Healthcare costs are insane. I cut my foot a while ago swimming in a river. An ER visit and 4 stitches (put in by a med student doing it for the first time, I shit you not) cost $1600.

Did the guy not have travel medical insurance? As a citizen living in the states I would be outraged by the costs of health care and the wacko system but as a visitor from out of country you have to expect to be billed for everything. Yes the circumstances are unfortunate and none of this was his fault, but anyone travelling to the states – especially to rock climb – should have some insurance.
