Live From 2013 ABS Nationals Women’s Qualifiers

Good news:  The live stream of Women’s Qualifiers went really well.

Bad news:  Men’s Qualifiers cannot be broadcast live this afternoon.  Statement from USA Climbing:

HEY, EVERYBODY — We appreciate everyone who tuned in to this morning’s “super secret” beta test of the ABS 14 National Championship Live Broadcast. Due to the size of the men’s field, we will not be able to broadcast the Men’s Qualifier round until the last male competitor has checked in to isolation (which we do not anticipate happening until approximately 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time). Please follow @louderthan11 and @unifiedbc on twitter for the announcement that we are LIVE.

We will be broadcasting on schedule for Semifinals and Finals beginning tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. Mountain Time.

Thanks for your support!

Today was a test of the broadcast system in preparation for tomorrow’s finals.  Because of this, all contingencies between the broadcast and the schedule of the event were not fully accounted for.  Basically, after the session ended, it was realized that male competitors would be able to watch the live stream before it was their turn to climb.   Rest assured, however, that we will be ready to rock and roll tomorrow morning at 10:45 MST for semi-finals.

Always love watching comp live feeds! The biggest thing I’ve noticed about the commentating is that the commentators are sometimes at a loss for what to say. As a pro sports fan (NFL, NBA especially) I’ve started to pay more attention to why the best commentators are so good. It seems that a big thing that could help climbing commentating along would be lotsa stats! Tell us about each competitor’s previous exploits in competitions, how they fared against different competitors, different problems, different venues, etc. I want to hear about the previous couple ABS nationals, who are veterans from those comps? Who didn’t come this year? Also, recent significant ascents outside too, where have the competitors been lately. Paint us a picture of the climbers, give us personalities and rivalries to cheer for. It may take a good amount of research and prep work but I think it would make the live feeds that much better!

My 2cents. Excited to watch the rest of the action this weekend!

Those are all things we’re keen to bring you tomorrow. It’s tough for qualifiers because a) we didn’t know for sure it would happen and b) there are just too many climbers to be prepared for.
