Video Friday – 4/20/2012

Memo to PR people:  never send me anything about Bear Grylls again1.  Ever.  I mean, I guess there’s a chance that this laughable video is just a big inside joke that we will all be let in on, or that some clever marketer decided that by baiting climbers  into watching it by making it so unrealistic that they could get their message across.

Or it could just be further evidence that 99.

9% of the public doesn’t understand rock climbing at all so making the climbing scenes authentic was a low priority.  Either way, you win this time clever marketers.

Damn, how’d I miss the irony on this one. It’s either too early in the morning or I’m taking life too seriously. O.o

Bear Grylls don’t need climbing shoes. Love it.

I love the half pad mono sloping pocket her “Bears” down on. Very impressive. The stunt man really held the splits well with the one arm re-chalk in the crack. Who needs more than a twin rope or a belayer when you are Bear Grylls.

As much as the bear grylls promo makes me gag/cringe, as it sounds like it does all of us…

I think we still should respect what it seems like the man is trying to do.

I don’t think you can accomplish what Bear has accomplished in Life without a certain intense “degree” (sorry) of passion and love. As a community of climbers, i know we’ve all felt this passion

I have to choose to believe that Bear wants more than anything to share his passion for living A Muerte with the world at large. He knows he’s not going to touch as many lives by camping out in a Kentucky trailer or bumming it in the backcountry of Colorado as he can with a cheesy prime time tv commercial.

I’m sure he’s as disappointed as the rest of us by the Necessary Evil 5.14 (sorry) of bullshitting the mainstream through their medium of choice: sensationalized and irrational smoke and mirrors on the tv.

If you close your eyes and just listen the video, I think you’ll find it’s as truthful and meaningful as any bigUp production or homegrown climbing vid.

I think we have to give this the benefit of the doubt and believe, for the sake of our community:

Degree just wants to sell a product people may or may not need, all so they can make tons of money they may or may not deserve.

Bear grylls really wants to change lives and inspire people to find the inspiration we have all found in climbing.

Narc, isn’t this why you chose to share it with us? Or are you on the take as well?!? 😉

There’s suppose to be a *wink* at the end of my last comment, Narc. Certainly not throwing out legitimate accusations.

Marines are frauds.. They have ghosts
Help them and they dont really have white tshirt camo that magically turns into a dress uniform.. Anti american climber Propagand. But they teach climbing in the marines even though they have Blackhawks to ride to top of spire? . Too bad Bear is English we need real heros.
