Petzl GriGri 2 Recall

Yesterday Petzl announced on their website that they are issuing a recall for the newly released GriGri 2 due to potential problems with the brake lever. Apparently there are circumstances where the handle can become damaged and then stuck in the open position which then disables the GriGri’s assisted breaking feature. Here’s what to look for on your GriGri 2 to see if you are affected by this recall as well as what you should do to get your GriGri 2 replaced:

If you have a GRIGRI 2 (D14 2O, D14 2G, D14 2B) with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136, stop use immediately and contact Petzl America to initiate an exchange.
Contact Petzl America in one of two ways:

– By email: grigri2recall@petzl.com
Petzl will pay all shipping costs associated with this exchange

This news comes on the heels of an earlier post from Petzl regarding the possibility that the rope could become lodged behind the cam on the GriGri 2 and a handful of anecdotal reports I’ve been hearing about the GriGri 2 wearing out much faster than it’s predecessor. I’ve yet to have any real problems with mine, but it seems like there is more to come with regards to the GriGri 2.

    Something to note, I mailed mine in yesterday and had to pay for the shipping because UPS claims that they can no longer accept the shipping code that was given to me by the Petzl rep over the phone.  However, Petzl said that they would throw in some goodies to make up for the shipping costs (about 9 bucks).  Petzl also told me that once they get the old Gri Gri in it will only take them a day or two to turn around and ship out a new one.  I will let you know when I get it back how everything turns out

      OK, so I just got in my new Gri Gri.  Everything looks good and pretty quick turnaround if you ask me.  They also threw in one carabiner to pay back for the shipping costs I had to pay on the front end.  They matched the color of my original Gri Gri.  I guess I am pleased with this, until the next recall…

        Thanks for the update.  I haven’t gotten around to checking mine but I would assume it is affected by the recall.

    Damn it, mine is in that batch.  I’ve probably used it for 5-6 days, caught a number of leader falls, and done a lot of lowering without incident…oh well, I’m exchanging it.

    Hmm, mines in that batch and I’ve been using mine for 2 months and have caught many, many leader falls including some big whippers (on purpose, practicing falling).  Works like a charm!  Sucks I have to mail it back… I use it like 4 times a week… 😛

    Shoot, and I was just about to buy one…

    Did you and Kevin go to A today Brian? I ended up setting boulders at the spot and lost outside psych. We should hit the real boulders while you’re still in town though.
