Video: How A Climbing Rope Is Made

Climbing ropes are probably the most important piece of climbing equipment out  there yet it seems like we (or just I) spend more time talking about the minute differences between various rock climbing shoes and other less important topics.  Why this is I don’t really know.  What I do know is that the process behind how climbing ropes are made is rather interesting as evidenced by this clip from the Discovery Channel’s How It’s Made:

Check out the American Alpine Institute blog for an additional video from Sterling with more information on how ropes are made.

i always thought it was a bunch of mini british kids playing teatherball fueled by ultra concentrated earl grey.

the reality is much less cool.

omg that steel blue rope they show in the very beginning [a rope “extra”] with kinda purple bands is totally MY ROPE. i got this when i started climbing in 1999 and it is still in what i would consider “NEW” condition! it has been used more for cleaning boulder problems than for actually climbing.

    ha!

Cool stuff! I love learning how stuff is made.
Just saw the rockclimbing exhibit here in LA called Granite Frontiers and I can’t wait to do some more climbing…tho far from what the Yosemite climbers are able to do!
