After teasing us with a few shorts, MomentumVM has begun releasing (somewhat) longer videos from Chris Sharma’s recent trip to Yangshuo, China. The first segment can be viewed at this link (provided you are logged in), and it features Sharma on one of the hard projects he bolted.
Unfortunately, the pace of updates at MVM has slowed considerably the last few months and the stream of contributors has seemingly dried up. This isn’t entirely unexpected, but I have thoroughly enjoyed MVM these past two years so it is my hope that it finds a way to continue.

In other news, check out this mysterious Organic shirt wearing boulderer I captured flying through the Midwest yesterday…
And look at that lovely garlic mustard next to the climber flying. Must be at DL.

It has grown a HUGE amount just in the past 2 weeks. Nasty.

I see he is sticking the lunge on Beautiful Soup. Send?
Dunno who it is tho 🙂

Affirmative on the problem and the send.

Good points about MVM, Brian. How they can position themselves when Vimeo HD, etc. is so readily available is a good question, especially when their product is so limited, i.e. just climbing videos. A comparison between the latest Sharma video and Joe K’s Re-Up at DPM says a lot. The full screen option at DPM makes a big difference even if MVM’s filming quality is often better.

Like we discussed when I was in Boulder, money is probably a major factor in the slowdown as well. It seems like there just isn’t that much money in climbing, either subscriptions or advertising, to sustain paying contributors for regular videos. It will be interesting to see how successful DPM is at this.

Hey Narc, what time were you guys up there? We were there mid day for a few hours then headed up to the Reserve. Would have been cool to have met up. Let me know next time your out.

Re MVM – the thing I don’t get is that they do nothing on the site to encourage contributors. Where is the ‘submit a video’ button? Increasingly there are people all over the world who are editing fairly high quality climbing footage and who would contribute if they could. And if they had a community section where videos could be voted and commented on, and perhaps the best videos floated to the front page, then they might create a sustainable model.

It has certainly been a bummer watching MVM’s slowdown recently.
I’ve always found it odd that they don’t encourage ANY community participation, not even comments on the videos or news items or anything. It’s 2009, allow for some feedback!
I think with a more versatile site, and more options for participation, like a user-made video contest or something, MVM might be able to attract more viewers and maybe then some more advertisement money.
MC is going to look a little silly if the “Sharma’s World” blog is never updated…

I was beginning to the think the same thing about the Sharma blog.

Looking silly never really stopped me from doing things.
We are currently working on a new version of the site and it will address a lot of your thoughts. We’re definitely in a slow down phase but the goal is to survive and thrive.
Chris is a little hard to pin down but he’ll get something up soon.
Meanwhile part 2 will be up later tonight.

Part 2 is up and running. Good stuff. Expect to see a snowball effect/send train rolling on BS. I will put it to rest for good. THUNDERCATS HO!

I think Deadpoint has given MVM a great opportunity to take a different angle on climbing clips. Deadpoint has certainly taken the route of high profile climbers on high profile climbs, which is an easy way to gain a fast following (and seemed to work well for MC with clips such as Warpath at the start of MVM). However, I think MVM could really create something cool by focusing the videos on less well known climbers doing cool new things. 100 out of 100 times I would choose to watch someone do the FA of a rad V8 in a new area they are developing than a zoomed in shot of Sharma’s sanuks and him failing on some super-project. Now if only MC would post the HD videos I have sent (gave for free) him, everyone could stop complaining about the slowdown.

hayden-
I posted one of the videos, I believe, and the other was waiting on for your final version, which was the first week of June, you said.
thanks for the suggestions.
Get in touch and we’ll get it up.

omg i will slap hayden and sharma for you mike! i will put em both in line!
hayden: those squeemish trad lines look kinda hella compelling. plz make hd video of trad that does not suck. also, plz make video based on this theme: all the boulder problems that sock hands should try and has the ability to send in two three hour sessions over a two day weekend. illustrations and depictions of alternative short guy beta for each climb a bonus.
MAKE IT SO.
live this plan.
OR I’LL HAVE TO BUST OUT THE BITCHSLAPPING HAND AGAIN!

mike: the public demands more footage from castle rock idaho. i checked and confirmed this. also, the public wants more footage of the classics at LCC despite the heat and ticks.
also, the public demands more footage of v7s. kinder has posted a greater percentage of v7 photos on his site recently, which is evidence of a growing trend that can only make you mad rich and bring you inner peace.
also, if you are feeling like you need high quality footage of cutting-edge ascents with 10 to 20 minutes of extra non-climbing filler footage or rough cut-and-pasted effects, you should go check out my videos on vimeo. the three people who have ever watched them agree that the skills are mad indeed. unfortunately, my styles have been copied all over the media since i created these masterpieces, but you know i have even more better things up my sleeve!
you know, like, worse quality footage and even more nonsensicle cut and paste action!
i have no clue!
