What A Difference A Week Makes

What A Difference A Week Makes

Two weekends ago I was out at Governor Dodge pulling down on sandstone boulder problems in a t-shirt.  Conditions really could not have been much better.

At the time, I knew that the bouldering season would probably be over soon, but I had hopes that winter would hold off a bit longer.

Unfortunately for me, winter held off for less than a day and with that the season for outdoor rock climbing was pretty much over.

However, cold weather happens to be good for another discipline of climbing and that is of course ice climbing.  I have virtually no experience with ice climbing, but a friend of mine offered to take me out this past weekend to a quarry in northeastern Wisconsin to give it a try.  I wish I could say that I cruised my way up each climb because I am such rad rock climber dude, but that would a lie.  Each climb was a battle against terrible footwork, cold hands and insane pump.  Despite my struggles, I had a great time.  Big thanks to The Professor for taking me out!

Ah those clean lines and right angles look like Indian Creek! Nothing like a little midwest toprope in the old quarry action…

if only we all could get paid to jet around the country climbing on the sickest boulders our country had to offer, then we wouldn’t have to lower ourselves to things like ice climbing

Good point, we were climbing with leashes. The leashes also made it hard to relax my hands to rest.
