Taylors Falls

Taylors Falls

This weekend we made a brief 2 day roadtrip to Minnesota.  On Friday night we attended the “Sweet 16” party at Vertical Endeavors St. Paul.  They were celebrating 16 years of business, and we were on hand to do a shoe demo for our favorite shoe company, Five Ten.  Overall, the party seemed like a success and we had a lot of fun meeting everyone that stopped by our little corner of the action.  Of course, this entire trip to St. Paul was just an excuse to get up north to finally check out some of the climbing I have been reading about for the past year or so.

Our destination for Saturday’s session was Taylors Falls at Interstate State Park, about 45 minutes NE of the Twin Cities (about 5.5 hours from Milwaukee).   We met up with Neil who had offered to give us a tour of the bouldering which is split between the WI and MN sides of the St. Croix river.  The climbing on the WI side was very reminiscent of RMNP except with sharper holds.

The problems in the classic cave area were powerful and crimpy which suited me just fine.  The rock on the MN side was amazingly polished (by nature, not climbers) which definitely made for a different, yet still fun challenge.

Needless to say, we were pretty tired by the time Neil concluded our tour.

The day was made even better by the psyched crew that we ran into at the boulders.  Along with Lynn, we met several other people who made the day that much better with their positive attitudes.  Special thanks to those who mentioned that they were Climbingnarc.com readers, I appreciate it!

While there were fewer problems than I was expecting, the quality of movement and rock on the lines we saw was really good.  Comparing it to Governor Dodge here in WI, I thought the climbing at Taylors was quite a bit more fun.  I’m fairly psyched to get back there this fall to try and link up the Cave Traverse (V8), but we will have to see what the schedule (and weather) allows for.  Major thanks to Neil for the tour!

Here are a few pictures of Neil from his near send of the Cave Traverse (V8).  The proverbial “fell off the last hard move”…so close!

Oh god, if I see Neil come that close again, I’m gonna catch his fall and put him right back on the wall! This is the longest worked, most deserved, eventual send of anything I’ve watched anyone do! It breaks my heart everytime!
