DiGiulian & Spannuth Climbing Well In Oliana

It was another low gravity day (or days) at Oliana as Americans Sasha DiGiulian and Ben Spannuth both had good days over the weekend.

DiGiulian became the 4th woman in the past few weeks to repeat Chris Sharma’s Mind Control (5.14c), needing only 4 tries to achieve success.  I joked on Facebook last week that it might be easier to keep track of who is in Oliana that hasn’t done this route, but all joking and all talk of downgrade aside, it’s pretty impressive how many people (male or female) are climbing at this level even if the route is “only” 5.14b.  In addition to repeating Mind Control, DiGiulian also onsighted three 5.13s in Oliana over the weekend according to her 8a scorecard.

Spannuth apparently hasn’t done Mind Control, but he did onsight El gran blau (5.14a/b) according to his 8a scorecard.  It’s hard to look at Spannuth’s 8a scorecard without being amazed by the rapid progress he has made in the past 6-12 months.

Go Ben! I tried training with him on a treadwall a few months ago before he went overseas the first time. Needless to say, I couldn’t hang…
