News & Notes
Ethan Pringle On Jumbo Love
Ethan Pringle is back at Mt. Clark, home to that one route first done by that one guy:
Projecting a route like this requires all of your attention, and having to devote all of your attention to a route like this can get really tiring really fast. At some point, you just want to get it over with. Of course, afterward you feel a mix of relief and loss. Relief that you’re done and the epic is over, and loss that this magnificent line doesn’t require your presence anymore. But for me, I think I’ll have to take a nice long break from serious route projects for a little while after this. Like Randy Levitt said, “It’s like a limestone El Cap.” Obviously, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but it does sort of convey the amount of work required to complete a project of this caliber.
Pringle is no stranger to Jumbo Love, having tried it even before its FA back in 2008. You can see some footage of those attempts here.
When In Doubt Pack It Out
I don’t know about you, but I always try my best to climb close to an actual bathroom. In case you don’t, the Access Fund has a nice refresher on what to do when nature calls.
Gravelle Repeats Echale (V14)
I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that with training like this that Canadian Yves Gravelle was able to climb his first V14 in Daniel Woods’ Echale in Clear Creek Canyon according to his 8a scorecard.

IMO it’s not “Dave Graham’s Girl Talk”. It’s a stolen route. It’s Andy Raether’s. Small point perhaps, but it bums me out. ce

I’m more or less with you on that one, but what’s done is done at this point and I didn’t want to rehash that whole saga.

i agree. andy did put a lot of work into the route, so there should be some respect. but it could also be karma? perhaps he’s stolen a project or two?
things eventully come full circle…as the stories goes.

Word. Retracted. ce

Andy Raether had the vision and did all the work to equip it, and Dave finally got Andy to agree to let him climb it.
I know Andy was injured at the time and I’m sure Dave was very persuasive, but I don’t see how it makes the route “stolen.”
More to the point: Congrats to Chris for the send! He seems to be settling back in at Rifle quite nicely.

red tags are gay, the jury is still out on Dave and Andy.
Props to Lick though.

hehe, deadpoint has a news blurb on their homepage saying Chris Linder got the 2nd ascent of Girl Talk. Mayhaps they need to do a little more fact checking.

Oops. Hopefully that doesn’t make it into print like last month’s “news” about Ethan Pringle.

james litz repeated it this summer as well

Nice, thanks for the update Brad.
While I’ve always sympathized with Andy’s position on this route, doesn’t the fact that it’s been climbed almost 10 times in a little over a year somewhat vindicate the position of Dave Graham, Joe Kinder, et al?? If they hadn’t insisted on climbing the route, it would likely still be closed.

No it doesn’t vindicate Graham’s position at all. If all those “pros” can climb it in just a few tries and yet the line was never bolted it proves how important the developer is to the area. Do you think none of them saw the line? When is the last time Dave Graham bolted a line in Colorado? Could it be never? Another question is how exactly does that advance the sport? Its not the hardest line in the canyon. If i run a 4:50 mile it doesn’t advance running. Its just another run. All the act did was discourage a local developer
