But by all accounts the multi-year effort by Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson to free climb the Dawn Wall on El Cap will likely end this afternoon.

I’m confused. Kevin just fell all over the first pitch of the day, but is continuing through the traverse to the belay. Doesn’t he need to top rope red point it, per the arbitrary rules established for the route?

In a twitter response to my question regarding the nature (or more specifically, source) of the “rules” used in the Dawn Wall ascent, KJ wrote that the rules are “stipulated by commonly accepted big wall free climbing ethics.”
