Speaking Of Youth…

I’ve had multiple non-climbing friends e-mail me links to stories about this video of a 22-month-old bouldering on a home woodie.  The stories are hardly worth linking to, but if the 500,000 views the Youtube version of the video has gotten are any indication, this thing has gone viral in a way that things like actual rock climbing can’t and probably never will.

Mt. Everest, speed climbing, free soloing and now toddlers climbing, does that pretty much cover the extent of the general public’s knowledge of rock climbing?

Yep. I think that about sums it up and I think bouldering is probably still the least understood by the general public.

I think bouldering is probably the least understood by me too: why DO I find pleasure in navigating an odd path up a 10 foot piece of rock….

I enjoy reading the comments and how ignorant people are in regards to climbing. Especially the ones calling the climbers bad parents seeing as how, from a personal standpoint, I would trust climbers over the general populace regarding safety issues since, O I don’t know, we deal with them every day, double-check/triple-check everything, etc…

Or the ones confusing luck with skill. It made me laugh when I read a comment saying the baby “was lucky to have navigated the wall safely.”

My 2 year old climbs a 10 deg overhang and my 3 year old climbs on my 70 deg wall. What’s the big deal?

Ok I know that I can fall from that height and there will be no problem, but a 22 month old? I think it might be a good idea to spot that kid during these climbing sessions. I’ve spotted children much older than her and you can practically catch them. It’s great that this parent is teaching their kid to climb at such a young age, but it still presents risks. She could hurt herself by falling and not climb ever again, or she could grow up thinking you never needed a spotter, and hurt herself then. It’s just a risk that’s not worth taking that can be easily removed with a spotter.
