Continuing yesterday’s theme of companies sponsoring cool media concepts is the new “Origins” film series brought to us by evolv and Mountain Gear. In collaboration with Sender Films & Big Up they are creating a series of shorts that are “about the new school paying homage to their heroes of the past, exploring climbing’s history, and revisiting some iconic (and iconoclastic) accomplishments of previous generations.”
The first installment follows Chris Lindner and Kurt Smith as Lindner tries to do the first repeat of Smith’s forgotten testpiece Dunce Cap (5.13a) in Joshua Tree, CA. Check it:
Installment #2 will apparently feature Lisa Rands and Peter Croft so that’s something to look forward to.
Very cool. Makes you want to plan a trip to J-tree again. Is there anywhere else in the world that imposes such counter-intuitive climbing? That shoulder blade cross-over looked vicious.
And I’ve always been impressed with Lindner’s demeanor in his videos – chill and lacking the pretensions that too often grip other strong climbers with a web presence. He doesnt pump out a lot of videos but when he does they are enjoyable and highly motivational for some reason…

You might not have seen SoulCal bouldering which depicts Linders uuhm, comedic-machismo side. (?) In other words, what else are a bunch of 20-something dudes going to do when they have someone to film them bouldering for the first time…lots of mooning of course!! Great flick though, still want to try ‘Belly Flop’ if anyone knows what i’m talking about and I couldn’t agree more, Linder seems very chill. 🙂

evolv seriously needs to clean up their website. so many dead ends and coming soon sections that have been around for years. it always makes me wonder if they’re on the verge of going under.

they aren’t, don’t worry.
