“The Disciples Of Gill” Premiers Tonight In Boulder

The Disciples of Gill, a film by Pat Ament about bouldering icon John Gill premiers tonight in Boulder, CO at 7 pm at Neptune Mountaineering.  The film goes back nearly 40 years to document how climbers like Gill, Ament and Jim Holloway planted the seeds that would take the sport of bouldering from a “trivial divertissement” to the hugely popular activity it is today.

You can read more about the film, including many quotes from Ament and Gill, in this Daily Camera article.  Of particular interest to me was this Gill quote about Jim Holloway:

“The film concentrated on my skills as a boulderer, but I told Pat that, more importantly, there was wonderful footage of Jim Holloway that modern climbers would find intriguing,” Gill said. “Some climbers today have a hard time accepting that someone like Holloway did the things he did so long ago.

Anyone in Boulder going to go see this??

I would go but thanksgiving travels are in order. Too bad, this sounds awesome.

I know this isn’t really a for-profit endeavor, but it would be awesome if Ament were to sell copies of this movie.

Yeah, it seems like a bad day for people to actually be in town for something like this.

Let us all hope that Narc will provide us with some continuing articles on the matter…sounds eh-fing cool. And Narc, if you get a chance to see it, can we get another review? Possibly without the linguistic “ass”-istance from the Jefferson Elementary School teaching staff. 😉

An interesting evening, cut short by my daughter deciding that watching older men talk about bouldering was not her cup of tea. Some great footage of Gill and Holloway. The film is to be re-edited in the future so no DVD yet. More on my blog tomorrow.
