A few weeks ago Tommy Caldwell and Hayden Kennedy were among a team of climbers featured on the TV show Flying Wild Alaska. Slated for release some time in February, Reach features the likes of Jon Cardwell, Felipe Carmargo, Dave Graham, Zach Lerner and Daniel Woods bouldering around the U.S and Brazil.

Video Friday: A Rehab Story With Josh Wharton

A few months ago all-around climber Josh Wharton broke his back after he made a mistake while maintaining a route in Rifle, CO and fell 25 ft. to the ground. Check out this excellent video in which Wharton talks about the accident, his approach to recovery, and watch him as he climbs a few nice “rehab” boulders in RMNP just a few months post-injury:

Climbing Video: Daniel Woods Sending Hypnotized Minds (V15)

2010 has been a pretty good year for Daniel Woods out on the boulders, what with his string of hard first ascents of problems like Desperanza (V15) in Hueco Tanks, The Game (V16) in Boulder Canyon, Warrior Up (V15) at Lincoln Lake and Hyptnotized Minds (V15) in RMNP. And those are just the FAs of problems V15 or harder.

Woods’ latest FA, the aforementioned Hypnotized Minds, is the subject of the below video from Sanuk. Those that have seen the 2010 Reel Rock Film Tour may recognize the problem as Woods and Paul Robinson are shown working the line as part of that segment.

Update: In addition to all the bouldering I mentioned, Woods also managed to do the 2nd ascent of Jaws 2, a likely 5.15a in Rumney, NH, back in October. You can now watch video from that send over at DPM.

Video Friday: Lincoln Lake GIANTS!

Louder Than 11′s 4 part series called Lincoln Lake GIANTS! about the bouldering at Mt. Evan’s Lincoln Lake came to an end this week so now seems like a good time to revisit the entire series.

When I posted about part 1 of Lincoln Lake GIANTS! in conjunction with the release of the now infamous Enter The Wolvo there was a lot of discussion around both movies. One of the things many people questioned about the GIANTS series was that the acting was not what one would call great, and it was hard to tell where the storyline, not something one sees in climbing movies usually, was going. I myself wondered these same things, but after seeing the series to its conclusion I have to say I was pretty entertained by the whole thing. The storyline they constructed actually brought a little bit of a smile to my face when I saw how it ended. Plus, even if you hate the story and the acting there are plenty of FUN looking boulders getting climbed so there is always that to fall back on.

Video Friday: The Bachar-Yerian

Friday is here once again and to help get you through the day is this nice video from Cole Gibson of the classic route the Bachar-Yerian (5.11c R/X) in Yosemite’s Tuolumne Meadows. Famous for its runouts and a real homage to the ground up ethic of John Bachar, the Bachar-Yerian is a must do for those with the physical skills and, perhaps more importantly, the mental chops to keep their head on the long runouts.

The video chronicles two “regular” guys, Andrew Rock and Jan McCollum, making it their mission to send the route. Pretty inspiring to see their hard work pay off!

Climbing Video Release News and Video Friday

Videos are back this Friday, but first some news about longer form movies.

First, if you’re wondering when/if you’ll be able to buy the movies from the 2010 Reel Rock Tour you’re in luck. Big Up mentioned on their blog that these films will be released on DVD in late November with downloads following in December. Apparently they will also be offering downloads of some of their older films which is something to look forward to.

Second, Chuck Fryberger is working on two new climbing projects set for release sometime in the next couple of years. The Network will profile Kilian Fischhuber “as he reconnects with some of the amazing climbers he’s met on the world cup circuit, and finds out about their local areas and the style of climbing that motivates them to achieve new levels.” The other project, dubbed The Scene, will be more like previous Fryberger releases Pure and Core as it “compares and contrasts climbers and climbing culture” in Moab, Boulder, Innsbruck and Spain. Footage of Nalle Hukkataival climbing at Joe’s Valley and in RMNP is already in the can so be on the lookout for The Scene sometime next year.

With that news out of the way let’s get to the videos, both of which highlight some of the new boulder development that took place at Mt. Evans’ Lincoln Lake this past summer. The first effort comes from the “Island” crew of Chad Greedy, Jon Cardwell and Dave Graham. While not the most…polished of movies, “Enter The Wolvo” does an excellent job showcasing the Tour de Force that was Dave Graham this summer. Just when you think he couldn’t possibly climb another double-digit boulder problem…he climbs another double-digit boulder problem. Enjoy:

In somewhat of a contrast is the first chapter in the “Lincoln Lake GIANTS!” series brought to you by the guys at Louder Than 11. This series is focusing on first ascents of all grades at Lincoln Lake with a bit of a story thrown in for good measure. A new episode will be released each Monday with the grand finale set for November 22nd so keep an eye out for those.

Video Friday: The Beta Horse Pens 40 2010

The 2nd stop on the 2010 Triple Crown Bouldering Series circuit is rapidly approaching in just 2 weeks at Horse Pens 40, AL. Registration for the HP40 stop will be limited this year so if you haven’t made your mind up yet you might want to do so soon as it will apparently be full in the near future.

To help get you excited for the Triple Crown comp, your own trip to HP40 or just climbing in general, here is another edition of Andrew Kornylak’s The Beta series which features HP40 legend and guidebook author Adam Henry. In the video Henry climbs Honky Tonkin’ (V4) and Short Long (V7), both of which I wouldn’t have minded having some beta on when I tried them in recent years…
