Before we get to this week’s videos there are a few tidbits of news regarding some upcoming climbing movies.

First, the guys at Big Up Productions are over in Spain to catch all the action as Chris Sharma and Adam Ondra work a project at Oliana. Joe Kinder is on the scene to provide media of the media¹ so check out his blog for some great pictures and the details on what’s going down.

Second, Chuck Fryberger just released his winter 2012 newsletter which contains several nuggets about upcoming projects we can expect to see from Chuck Fryberger Films. Chuck and his team have been hard at work filming Paul Robinson in Vegas, Nalle Hukkataival and Ian Dory in Arkansas, Sam Elias in Ouray, Adam Ondra bouldering somewhere for the 2012 Reel Rock Tour, Fred Nicole for Prana and they will soon be heading to Turkey and Croatia with Kilian Fischhuber. There’s also the news that Core and Pure will soon be coming to iTunes and Netflix.

Dean Potter On Nat Geo This Sunday

Tune in to Nat Geo at 8 PM EST this Sunday to catch Dean Potter doing his thing: highlining, free soloing, BASE jumping and even climbing with a rope¹. As you can see in the second preview clip below, some of the free soloing includes soloing on the upper reaches of El Cap which isn’t something that happens every day². After you watch the videos be sure to check out this incredible image Mikey Schaefer captured of Potter highlining on Cathedral Peak. Wow.

Update: Outside has more details on what exactly it was that Potter was doing up on El Cap without a rope

This week’s edition of Video Friday serves as a helpful reminder that when it comes to things “going viral” on the internet there is climbing viral and there is rest of the world viral.

Look no further than the Yosemite Timelapse video¹ which fortunately is tangentially related to the world of climbing in that was filmed in Yosemite and climbers do make a brief appearance thus allowing me to post it here. In under a week the video has amassed an amazing 1,100,000 views and counting. I know I’ve accounted for at least a handful of those views, and I’ll probably account for several more. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t done so already.

That video joins a steady supply of other high quality videos in this week’s edition of Video Friday…

Deep North: A Trip To The Arrigetch Peaks With Caldwell & Kennedy

A few weeks ago Tommy Caldwell and Hayden Kennedy were among a team of climbers featured on the TV show Flying Wild Alaska. It was an interesting week in the climbing movie space with the release of Wizard’s Apprentice and Park Life in quick succession. These two movies in particular provided an interesting juxtaposition of styles. On the one hand you had the LT11 crew psyched and feeding off each other’s energy as they bouldered as a group in Yosemite, while on the other hand you had Adam Ondra climbing almost exclusively by himself to achieve his incredible goals. Both approaches have their positives and negatives, and it was interesting to have that contrast in such a short time period.

It was also interesting to see the different reactions to the Ondra movie. I posted my thoughts on Monday, and throughout the week others have posted theirs as well. Andrew Bisharat takes things a bit too far in his review in my view, but I think he makes some valid points. Certainly the movie could have been improved in some aspects, but overall I would tend to side with Jamie Emerson’s response to Bisharat which acknowledges some of the faults but focuses on the overall merits of the film.

Understanding Patagonia

The news from the other day aside, things happening in Patagonia are usually outside my purview. It’s not that I don’t respect what climbers do there, it’s more that I have a hard time identifying with what it must be like to climb there since I’ve never done anything like it. Posts like this one from Mikey Schaefer that combine a story about a new route on the south face of Poincenot with some incredible photos sure do help though.

“That High Up Who Wouldn’t Need A Diaper?”

If you’ve spent any time watching TV in the past few months the chances are pretty good you’ve seen this commercial:

That would be Katie Brown and Alex Honnold climbing Ancient Art near Moab, UT. Compared to the things we’re used to seeing Honnold doing this is pretty tame, but what about the general public? What do they think when they see two people rock climbing? Well, apparently at least two words: IMMINENT DEATH. Watch:
