This weekend the IFSC Bouldering World Cup circuit visits Innsbruck, Austria. As usual you can follow the action live at IFSC.tv. Women’s qualifers begin later today at 9:00 AM EDT and the action resumes tomorrow morning at 6:30 AM EDT. Check out the IFSC.tv website for the full schedule.

Speaking of comps, the word on the street is that the next stop on the UBC Pro Tour will be announced next week. Get ready comp fans on the west coast…

I guess I wasn’t kidding last week when I said that last weekend could be the end of the spring climbing season. During a fitness burn at the end of my weekend in the Red River Gorge I was pressing on a foot hold with my left foot when I heard a disturbing sound. I initially though it was a hold breaking even though that sort of thing would have been unlikely given the route I was on. Unfortunately, the sound was my ankle blowing up, and I haven’t taken a step since without a crutch. Nothing like a badly sprained ankle to put a pretty definitive end to the season. To paraphrase Dave Graham: I guess that’s why I won’t be doing Terremer Paradise Lost this season.

Today’s Video Friday marks the final Friday in April which means the end of the spring season is coming soon¹. I’ll be spending the weekend fighting the pump down in the Red River Gorge and hopefully you’ll be out climbing as well. Now is the time!

This weekend also marks the bouldering World Cup’s visit to Vienna. Qualifiers for the men are wrapping up right now at ifsc.tv. Women’s qualifiers, featuring Alex Puccio and Angie Payne, will start around 1 PM EDT. Semis and finals are tomorrow beginning at 4:15 and 11:45 respectively.

Reel Rock 7 Site Launches With DiGiulian Era Vella Footage

The folks over at the Reel Rock Film Tour just launched their new website for 2012′s 7th edition of the tour, and it just so happens that they have a little footage to tease us all with of Sasha DiGiulian climbing on Era Vella (5.14d), the 5.14d she sent just yesterday. Pretty good timing, eh?

In addition, this year’s site features a blog that opens with an entry about what the film crew was up to this spring in Spain:

There are several main story threads in the film, including Ondra’s power-building bouldering stint, Sharma’s new vision for ultra-hard multi-pitch routes, and the collaboration / race between the two of them to establish the world’s first 9b+ (.15c).

But during the course of filming in Spain one of the biggest themes to naturally emerge was the explosion of talent and motivation among female climbers.

Reel Rock 7 kicks off September 13th and 14th in Boulder before hitting the road for its annual world tour. If past years are any indication you aren’t going to want to miss it.

Upping The Pressure

It’s been many years since I first heard about Dave Graham’s vision for a new website built around his “island” vision. The site has existed in one form or another in private for some time, however for many reasons the project has not reached the light of day…until now…sort of:

Over the years, we’ve failed to execute for one reason or another. Usually that means death for a project like this. Miraculously, Dave has managed to keep the interest level and motivation high. From my perspective, new concepts and technology keep rolling in that are seemingly forcing this effort. My (selfish) intention for this post is to up the stakes and catalyze execution.

My selfish intention is that this post highlighting the above post will further up the pressure and help this project see the light of day. Get it done fellas!

Memo to PR people: never send me anything about Bear Grylls again¹. Ever. I mean, I guess there’s a chance that this laughable video is just a big inside joke that we will all be let in on, or that some clever marketer decided that by baiting climbers into watching it by making it so unrealistic that they could get their message across. Or it could just be further evidence that 99.9% of the public doesn’t understand rock climbing at all so making the climbing scenes authentic was a low priority. Either way, you win this time clever marketers. But never again…
