Annual Hound Ears Comp Cancelled

Bad news for fans of the annual bouldering comp that has taken place for 19 years at Hound Ears in North Carolina:

For 19 years, the Hound Ears Club has graciously allowed one of the largest and most successful climbing competitions to take place on their property. Each year the event is allowed based on Hound Ears Club Board approval.

Despite the excellent relationship that has been developed over nearly two decades, it appears that the board has decided to not allow the competition to take place in 2013. We are actively seeking for the board to reconsider their decision with the support of both the Access Fund and the American Alpine Club.

So what’s the plan for the triple crown? Is it now a double crown or are they going to try rock town or the bald or… ?

Seems like i heard rocktown would not allow it way back when the thing was getting started. would be funny if they chose stone summit though! maybe then folks would not just send everything they have dialed like they do at the other areas

I remember at some point they were discussing the bald. I think it would be perfect. Good spots to shuttle from, a climber owned area, (at least the west side) the parking would be a great spot for setting up tents and its a lot closer to the other spots than boone. Not to mention a great variety of problems especially if you include the rest of the bald. Granted none of it compares to the exclusivity of hounds ears but not much we can do about that this year. Even if it gets cleared up I doubt it will be in time for this year’s 3x crown. I would say people have it less dialed than lrc or hp40… just that damn hike is the only downside imo

Politics with the park being what they are, the sheer size of the comp would be an issue. Besides, there’s some question of whether or not the Bald would even be climbable in November. Its true that the West would be good at that time, but what about the excellent problems in the east?
