Competitive Bouldering Coming To Central Park With The UBC Eastern Mountain Sports Pro

Competitive Bouldering Coming To Central Park With The UBC Eastern Mountain Sports Pro

I know that this was not the best kept secret in the world, but today the Unified Bouldering Championships is officially announcing that their next event June 23-25, The Eastern Mountain Sports Pro, will be held in New York City and more specifically in Central Park:

The Eastern Mountain Sports Pro will be three non-stop days of climbing and entertainment, beginning with Pro Qualifiers on the 23rd, Semi Finals on the 24th (locations TBA), and Pro Finals on Saturday the 25th. Finals marks the first time EVER that professional climbing will take place in CENTRAL PARK, and of course no UBC tour stop would be complete without an after party and there will be entertainment, NE2C style, planned each night of the event.

Pro Finals will take place near the Central Park Naumburg Bandshell (enter the park at West 72nd st) as part of Adventures NYC presented by The North Face. Click here for the map.

More to come as the event draws closer, but until then here is the official press release:

Climbing, Urban Climber and Backpacker (Active Interest Media Outdoor Group), The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the Unified Bouldering Championships are proud to announce the second stop of the 2011 UBC Pro Tour, the Eastern Mountain Sports Pro, to be held in New York City on June 23-25. The Eastern Mountain Sports Pro will feature the world’s best pro climbers competing on the world’s biggest stage right in the heart of NYC. The EMS Pro Finals will be hosted in Central Park at the 7th annual Adventures NYC presented by The North Face® on June 25th. Adventures NYC is a collaboration between AIM and the NYC Parks Dept to showcase all that Central Park and the great outdoors have to offer. The Eastern Mountain Sports Pro is a breakthrough event for climbers and a premier showcase for the sport.

“Eastern Mountain Sports was founded by rock climbers, so the sport has always been the heart and soul of our brand,” said Ted Manning, Executive Vice President of Retail Marketing and Merchandising at Eastern Mountain Sports. “We’ve been sponsoring climbing competitions for years, but this will be the biggest event we’ve ever been a part of. It’s the perfect opportunity to show young people how they can get started in climbing and experience the sense of accomplishment that is unique to the sport.”

The Eastern Mountain Sports Pro and Adventures NYC are teaming up for an exciting new partnership. “The addition of the UBC Pro Tour to Adventures NYC is a natural evolution of the festival, emphasizing the importance of connecting urban youth with the active outdoor lifestyle,” says Kent Ebersole, Publisher of Active Interest Media’s Outdoor Group.

The UBC Pro Tour continues to raise the bar and progress the sport of bouldering. “In our sixth season of working to grow competition climbing on the biggest stages worldwide, it’s fantastic to begin to get a glimpse of ways that our sport can continue to grow,” says UBC Pro Tour Director Pete Ward. “We are thrilled that for the first time ever we will put the best climbers on the planet in the center at Adventures NYC in Central Park. As climbers, we have all benefited tremendously from our passion for climbing and events like this give us the best possible opportunity to bring that passion to the widest possible audience. I can’t wait.”
