I had the chance to hang with John in 2006 at the Summer OR show in Salt Lake. I was just starting to climb more trad, and just returned from a trip to the Eastern Sierra's/Mammoth Lakes area. I was demoing a pair of the Spectres at the show and told John about my recent trip to his home town - he gave me the shoes on the spot! $130 shoes for free!
Since then, the Spectres have been my goto shoe for long trad climbs - I highly recommend trying them, the rubber is so sticky it might be cheating.
John had a great attitude about climbing and showed me some true generosity as a young climber. RIP John Bachar - dude you were legit.
